Volodymyr Sapsai 8839e278ff [Modules] Improve error message when cannot find parent module for submodule definition.
Before the change the diagnostic for

    module unknown.submodule {}

was "error: expected module name" which is incorrect and misleading
because both "unknown" and "submodule" are valid module names.

We already have a better error message when a parent module is a
submodule itself and is missing. Make the error for a missing top-level
module more like the one for a submodule.

Volodymyr Sapsai 7ac737e56b [HeaderSearch] Fix processing #import-ed headers multiple times with modules enabled.
HeaderSearch was marking requested HeaderFileInfo as Resolved only based on
the presence of ExternalSource. As the result, using any module was enough
to set ExternalSource and headers unknown to this module would have
HeaderFileInfo with empty fields, including `isImport = 0`, `NumIncludes = 0`.
Such HeaderFileInfo was preserved without changes regardless of how the
header was used in other modules and caused incorrect result in
`HeaderSearch::ShouldEnterIncludeFile`.

Fix by marking HeaderFileInfo as Resolved only if ExternalSource knows
about this header.

Alex Lorenz 11d612ac99 [clang][Preprocessor] Replace the slow translateFile call by a new, faster isMainFile check
The commit 3c28a2dc6b introduced the check that checks if we're
trying to re-enter a main file when building a preamble. Unfortunately this slowed down the preamble
compilation by 80-90% in some test cases, as translateFile is really slow. This change checks
to see if the FileEntry is the main file without calling translateFile, but by using the new
isMainFile check instead. This speeds up preamble building by 1.5-2x for certain test cases that we have.

D52774 fixed a bug with typo correction of includes, but didn't add

No explicit test since I couldn't figure out how to get the

Nico Weber b9d50bdff2 Fix pr31836 on Windows too, and correctly handle repeated separators.
The approach in D30000 assumes that the '/' returned by path::begin()
is the first element for absolute paths, but that's not true on
Windows.

Also, on Windows backslashes in include lines often end up escaped
so that there are two of them. Having backslashes in include lines
is undefined behavior in most cases and implementation-defined
behavior in C++20, but since clang treats it as normal repeated
path separators, the diagnostic should too.

Unbreaks -Wnonportable-include-path for absolute paths on Windows,
and unbreaks it on non-Windows in the case of absolute paths with
repeated directory separators.

This affects e.g. the `#include __FILE__` technique if the file
passed to clang has the wrong case for the drive letter. Before:

C:\src\llvm-project>bin\clang-cl.exe c:\src\llvm-project\test.cc
c:\\src\\llvm-project\\test.cc(4,10): warning: non-portable path to file
    '"c\\srccllvm-projectctest.cc.'; specified path differs in case from
    file name on disk [-Wnonportable-include-path]
         ^

Now:

C:\src\llvm-project> out\gn\bin\clang-cl c:\src\llvm-project\test.cc
c:\\src\\llvm-project\\test.cc(4,10): warning: non-portable path to file
    '"C:\\src\\llvm-project\\test.cc"'; specified path differs in case from

Richard Smith 0a088ead85 Improve diagnostics for missing import / #include of module.
Fix a few bugs where we would fail to properly determine header to
module correspondence when determining whether to suggest a #include or
import, and suggest a #include more often in language modes where there
is no import syntax. Generally, if the target is in a header with
include guards or #pragma once, we should suggest either #including or
importing that header, and not importing a module that happens to
textually include it.

In passing, improve the notes we attach to the corresponding
diagnostics: calling an entity that we couldn't see "previous" is
confusing.

If a PCH is used for compilation, SourceManager::isInMainFile()
returns true even for the "<built-in>" predefines area. Using -D

It is admitedly a bit fishy to set a macro only for a TU and not
for the PCH, but this works fine if the PCH does not use the macro
(I couldn't find a statement on this for Clang, but GCC explicitly
allows this in the docs).

[clang] Make sure argument expansion locations are correct in presence of predefined buffer
Summary:
Macro argument expansion logic relies on skipping file IDs that created
as a result of an include. Unfortunately it fails to do that for
predefined buffer since it doesn't have a valid insertion location.

As a result of that any file ID created for an include inside the
predefined buffers breaks the traversal logic in
SourceManager::computeMacroArgsCache.

To fix this issue we first record number of created FIDs for predefined
buffer, and then skip them explicitly in source manager.

Another solution would be to just give predefined buffers a valid source
location, but it is unclear where that should be..

Richard Smith 6bc7502385 When making modules transitively visible, don't take into account
whether they have missing header files.

Whether a module's headers happen to be present on the local file system
should make no difference to whether we make its contents visible when
importing another module that re-exports it. If we have an up-to-date
AST file that we can load, that's all that matters.

This fixes the ability to header syntax checking for modular headers in
C++20 mode (or in prior modes where -fmodules-local-submodule-visibility
is enabled but -fmodules is not).

Reid Kleckner e08464fb45 Avoid including FileManager.h from SourceManager.h
Most clients of SourceManager.h need to do things like turning source
locations into file & line number pairs, but this doesn't require
bringing in FileManager.h and LLVM's FS headers.

The main code change here is to sink SM::createFileID into the cpp file.
I reason that this is not performance critical because it doesn't happen
on the diagnostic path, it happens along the paths of macro expansion
(could be hot) and new includes (less hot).

Saves some includes:

Lots of headers pass around MemoryBuffer objects, but very few open
them. Let those that do include FileSystem.h.

Saves ~250 includes of Chrono.h & FileSystem.h:

$ diff -u thedeps-before.txt thedeps-after.txt | grep '^[-+] ' | sort | uniq -c | sort -nr
    254 -    ../llvm/include/llvm/Support/FileSystem.h

    192 -    ../llvm/include/llvm/ADT/StringSwitch.h
    190 -    ../llvm/include/llvm/Support/FormatVariadicDetails.h
...

This requires duplicating the file_t typedef, which is unfortunate. I
sunk the choice of mapping mode down into the cpp file using variable
template specializations instead of class members in headers.

Notably, we need to avoid checking the alignment of FileEntry, which
happens for DenseMap<FileEntry*> and PointerUnion<FileEntry*>. I

Alexandre Ganea 5fedc2b410 [Clang] Avoid crashing when generating crash diagnostics when '#pragma clang __debug [assert|crash|parser_crash|llvm_fatal_error|llvm_unreachable|overflow_stack]' are used
Previously, when the above '#pragma clang __debug' were used, Driver::generateCompilationDiagnostics() wouldn't work as expected.
The 'clang -E' process created for diagnostics would crash, because it would reach again the intended crash in Pragma.cpp, PragmaDebugHandler::HandlePragma() while preprocessing.

When generating crash diagnostics, we now disable the intended crashing behavior with a new cc1 flag -disable-pragma-debug-crash.

Notes:
- #pragma clang __debug llvm_report_fatal isn't currently tested by crash-report.c, because it needs exit() to be handled differently in -fintegrated-cc1 mode. See https://reviews.llvm.org/D73742 for an upcoming fix.

This adds a warning, flags and pragmas to limit the number of
pre-processor tokens either at a certain point in a translation unit, or
overall.

The idea is that this would allow projects to limit the size of certain
widely included headers, or for translation units overall, as a way to
insert backstops for header bloat and prevent compile-time regressions.

the overflow of the souce locations (limited to 2^31 chars) can generate all sorts of

In debug mode this assert would fail. So it might be a good start, as in PR42301,

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 5cca622310 clang/Modules: Refactor CompilerInstance::loadModule, NFC
Refactor the logic on CompilerInstance::loadModule and a couple of
surrounding methods in order to clarify what's going on.

- Rename ModuleLoader::loadModuleFromSource to compileModuleFromSource
  and fix its documentation, since it never loads a module. It just
  creates/compiles one.
- Rename one of the overloads of compileModuleImpl to compileModule,
  making it more obvious which one calls the other.
- Rename compileAndLoadModule to compileModuleAndReadAST. This
  clarifies the relationship between this helper and its caller,
  CompilerInstance::loadModule (the old name implied the opposite
  relationship). It also (correctly) indicates that more needs to be
  done to load the module than this function is responsible for.
- Split findOrCompileModuleAndReadAST out of loadModule. Besides
  reducing nesting for this code thanks to early returns and the like,
  this refactor clarifies the logic in loadModule, particularly around
  calls to ModuleMap::cacheModuleLoad and
  ModuleMap::getCachedModuleLoad.  findOrCompileModuleAndReadAST also
  breaks early if the initial ReadAST call returns Missing or OutOfDate,
  allowing the last ditch call to compileModuleAndReadAST to come at the
  end of the function body.
    - Additionally split out selectModuleSource, clarifying the logic
      due to early returns.
    - Add ModuleLoadResult::isNormal and OtherUncachedFailure, so that
      loadModule knows whether to cache the result.
      OtherUncachedFailure was added to keep this patch NFC, but there's
      a chance that these cases were uncached by accident, through
      copy/paste/modify failures. These should be audited as a
      follow-up (maybe we can eliminate this case).
    - Do *not* lift the setting of `ModuleLoadFailed = true` to
      loadModule because there isn't a clear pattern for when it's set.
      This should be reconsidered in a follow-up, in case it would be
      correct to set `ModuleLoadFailed` whenever no module is returned
      and the result is either Normal or OtherUncachedFailure.
- Add some header documentation where it was missing, and fix it where
  it was wrong.

This should have no functionality change.

In `DirectoryLookup::LookupFile` parameter `HasBeenMapped` doesn't cover

result, -Wnonportable-include-path suppression for header maps

Change parameter `HasBeenMapped` to `IsInHeaderMap` and use parameter
`MappedName` to track the filename remapping. This way we can handle
both relative and absolute paths in header maps, and account for their
specific properties, like filename remapping being a property preserved
across lookups in multiple directories.

`FileManager::getFileRef` is a modern API which we expect to convert to

`llvm::Expected` instead of `llvm::ErrorOr`, to help clients that care
about errors to ensure nothing is missed.

However, not all clients care. I've also added another path for those
that don't:

- `FileEntryRef` is now copy- and move-assignable (using a pointer
  instead of a reference).
- `FileManager::getOptionalFileRef` returns an `llvm::Optional` instead
  of `llvm::Expected`.

Alex Lorenz 4dc5573acc Introduce FileEntryRef and use it when handling includes to report correct dependencies
when the FileManager is reused across invocations

This commit introduces a parallel API to FileManager's getFile: getFileEntryRef, which returns
a reference to the FileEntry, and the name that was used to access the file. In the case of
a VFS with 'use-external-names', the FileEntyRef contains the external name of the file,
not the filename that was used to access it.

The new API is adopted only in the HeaderSearch and Preprocessor for include file lookup, so that the
accessed path can be propagated to SourceManager's FileInfo. SourceManager's FileInfo now can report this accessed path, using
the new getName method. This API is then adopted in the dependency collector, which now correctly reports dependencies when a file
is included both using a symlink and a real path in the case when the FileManager is reused across multiple Preprocessor invocations.

Note that this patch does not fix all dependency collector issues, as the same problem is still present in other cases when dependencies
are obtained using FileSkipped, InclusionDirective, and HasInclude. This will be fixed in follow-up commits.

Also, the diagnostic requires two arguments, so add the filename.

Nico Weber babdfdec90 clang: Diag running out of file handles while looking for files
clang would only print "file not found" when it's unable to find a
header file. If the reason for that is a file handle leak, that's not a
very useful error message. For errors that aren't in a small whitelist
("file not found", "file is directory"), print an error with the
strerror() output.

This changes behavior in corner cases: If clang was out of file handles
while looking in one -I dir but then suddenly wasn't when looking in the
next -I dir, and both directories contained a file with the desired
name, previously we'd silently return the file from the second
directory. For this reason, it's important to ignore "is a directory"
for this new diag: if a file foo/foo exists and -I -Ifoo are passed, an
include of "foo" should successfully open file "foo" in directory "foo/"
instead of complaining that "./foo" is a directory.

No test since we mostly hit this when there's a handle leak somewhere,
and currently there isn't one. I manually tested this with the repro
steps in comment 2 on the bug below.

Fixes PR42524.

Ilya Biryukov b455fc429f [Preprocessor] Always discard body of #define if we failed to parse it
Summary:
Preivously we would only discard it if we failed to parse parameter lists.
If we do not consume the body, parser sees tokens inside directive. In
turn, this leads to spurious diagnostics and a crash in TokenBuffer, see
the added tests.

Reid Kleckner c0e275df3d Remove cache for macro arg stringization
Summary:
The cache recorded the wrong expansion location for all but the first
stringization. It seems uncommon to stringize the same macro argument
multiple times, so this cache doesn't seem that important.
