Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 72379706ea DebugInfo: Match Name and DisplayName in testcase
There's no way for `DIBuilder` to create a subprogram or global variable
where `getName()` and `getDisplayName()` give different answers. This
testcase managed to achieve the feat though. This was probably just
left behind in some sort of upgrade along the way.

Adrian Prantl 9013c4b3b1 Debug Info: Relax assertion in isUnsignedDIType() to allow floats to be
described by integer constants. This is a bit ugly, but if the source
language allows arbitrary type casting, the debug info must follow suit.

For example:
  void foo() {

    *(int *)&a = 0;
  }
For the curious: SROA replaces the float alloca with an i32 alloca, which
is then optimized away and described via dbg.value(i32 0, ...).

Daniel Sanders 9a4f2c55df [mips] Fix 'jumpy' debug line info around calls.
Summary:
At the moment, address calculation is taking the debug line info from the
address node (e.g. TargetGlobalAddress). When a function is called multiple
times, this results in output of the form:

  .loc $first_call_location
  .. address calculation ..
  .. function call ..
  .. address calculation ..
  .loc $second_call_location
  .. function call ..
  .loc $first_call_location
  .. address calculation ..
  .loc $third_call_location
  .. function call ..

This patch makes address calculations for function calls take the debug line
info for the call node and results in output of the form:
  .loc $first_call_location
  .. address calculation ..
  .. function call ..
  .loc $second_call_location
  .. address calculation ..
  .. function call ..
  .loc $third_call_location
  .. address calculation ..
  .. function call ..

All other address calculations continue to use the address node.

Test Plan: Fixes test/DebugInfo/multiline.ll on a mips host.

David Blaikie df706288fb DebugInfo: Use distinct inlinedAt MDLocations to avoid separate inlined calls being coalesced
When two calls from the same MDLocation are inlined they currently get
treated as one inlined function call (creating difficulty debugging,
duplicate variables, etc).

Clang worked around this by including column information on inline calls
which doesn't address LTO inlining or calls to the same function from
the same line and column (such as through a macro). It also didn't
address ctor and member function calls.

By making the inlinedAt locations distinct, every call site has an
explicitly distinct location that cannot be coalesced with any other
call.

This can produce linearly (2x in the worst case where every call is
inlined and the call instruction has a non-call instruction at the same
location) more debug locations. Any increase beyond that are in cases
where the Clang workaround was insufficient and the new scheme is
creating necessary distinct nodes that were being erroneously coalesced
previously.

After this change to LLVM the incomplete workarounds in Clang. That
should reduce the number of debug locations (in a build without column
info, the default on Darwin, not the default on Linux) by not creating
pseudo-distinct locations for every call to an inline function.

(oh, and I made the inlined-at chain rebuilding iterative instead of
recursive because I was having trouble wrapping my head around it the
way it was - open to discussion on the right design for that function
(including going back to a recursive solution))

- Testcases were upgrade to the new MDLocation format.
- Instead of keeping a DebugDeclares map, we now use

 }

with this patch we emit the following debug info for this

 TAG_formal_parameter [3]
   AT_location( 0x00000000
                0x0000000000000000 - 0x0000000000000006: rdi, piece 0x00000008, rsi, piece 0x00000004

Adrian Prantl 5883af3faa Remove support for DIVariable's FlagIndirectVariable and expect
frontends to use a DIExpression with a DW_OP_deref instead.

This is not only a much more natural place for this informationl; there
is also a technical reason: The FlagIndirectVariable is used to mark a
variable that is turned into a reference by virtue of the calling
convention; this happens for example to aggregate return values.
The inliner, for example, may actually need to undo this indirection to
correctly represent the value in its new context. This is impossible to
implement because the DIVariable can't be safely modified. We can however
safely construct a new DIExpression on the fly.

accompanying clang commit for frontend testcases. I'll attach the
testcase upgrade script I used to PR21433 to help out-of-tree

This changes the schema for `DebugLoc` and `DILocation` from:

    !{i32 3, i32 7, !7, !8}

to:

    !MDLocation(line: 3, column: 7, scope: !7, inlinedAt: !8)

printed by the assembly writer.

Adrian Prantl 092d9489ed Debug Info: Move the complex expression handling (=the remainder) of
emitDebugLocValue() into DwarfExpression.

Ought to be NFC, but it actually uncovered a bug in the debug-loc-asan.ll
testcase. The testcase checks that the address of variable "y" is stored
at [RSP+16], which also lines up with the comment.
It also check(ed) that the *value* of "y" is stored in RDI before that,
but that is actually incorrect, since RDI is the very value that is
stored in [RSP+16]. Here's the assembler output:

	movb	2147450880(%rcx), %r8b
	#DEBUG_VALUE: bar:y <- RDI
	cmpb	$0, %r8b
	movq	%rax, 32(%rsp) # 8-byte Spill
	movq	%rsi, 24(%rsp) # 8-byte Spill
	movq	%rdi, 16(%rsp) # 8-byte Spill
.Ltmp3:
	#DEBUG_VALUE: bar:y <- [RSP+16]

Fixed the comment to spell out the correct register and the check to
expect an address rather than a value.

Note that the range that is emitted for the RDI location was and is still
wrong, it claims to begin at the function prologue, but really it should
start where RDI is first assigned.

David Blaikie aeaa5bf55e DebugInfo: Omit is_stmt from line table entries on the same line.
GCC does this for non-zero discriminators and since GCC doesn't produce
column info, that was the only place it comes up there. For LLVM, since
we can emit discriminators and/or column info, it makes more sense to
invert the condition and just test for changes in line number.

This should resolve at least some of the GDB 7.5 test suite failures
created by recent Clang changes that increase the location fidelity
(which, since Clang defaults to including column info on Linux by
default created a bunch of cases that confused GDB).

In theory we could do this better/differently by grouping actual source
statements together in a similar manner to the way lexical scopes are
handled but given that GDB isn't really in a position to consume that (&
users are probably somewhat used to different lines being different
'statements') this seems the safest and cheapest change. (I'm concerned
that doing this 'right' would bloat the debugloc data even further -
something Duncan's working hard to address)

Saleem Abdulrasool 4d6ed7c778 IAS: correct debug line info for asm macros
Correct the line information generation for preprocessed assembly. Although we
tracked the source information for the macro instantiation, we failed to account
for the fact that we were instantiating a macro, which is populated into a new
buffer and that the line information would be relative to the definition rather
than the actual instantiation location. This could cause the line number
associated with the statement to be very high due to wrapping of the difference
calculated for the preprocessor line information emitted into the stream.
Properly calculate the line for the macro instantiation, referencing the line
where the macro is actually used as GCC/gas do.

The test case uses x86, though the same problem exists on any other target using

Frederic Riss 7c78db5065 Correctly handle complex locations expressions in replaceDbgDeclareForAlloca()
replaceDbgDeclareForAlloca() replaces an alloca by a value storing the
address of what was the alloca. If there is a dbg.declare corresponding
to that alloca, we need to lower it to a dbg.value describing the additional
dereference operation to be performed to get to the underlying variable.
This is done by adding a DW_OP_deref to the complex location part of the
location description. This deref was added to the end of the operation list,
which is wrong. The expression applies to what is described by the
dbg.{declare, value}, and as we are changing this, we need to apply the
DW_OP_deref as the first operation in the list.

David Blaikie 3a443c29b9 Provide gmlt-like inline scope information in the skeleton CU to facilitate symbolication without needing the .dwo files
Clang -gsplit-dwarf self-host -O0, binary increases by 0.0005%, -O2,
binary increases by 25%.

A large binary inside Google, split-dwarf, -O0, and other internal flags
(GDB index, etc) increases by 1.8%, optimized build is 35%.

The size impact may be somewhat greater in .o files (I haven't measured
that much - since the linked executable -O0 numbers seemed low enough)
due to relocations. These relocations could be removed if we taught the
llvm-symbolizer to handle indexed addressing in the .o file (GDB can't
cope with this just yet, but GDB won't be reading this info anyway).
Also debug_ranges could be shared between .o and .dwo, though ideally
debug_ranges would get a schema that could used index(+offset)
addressing, and move to the .dwo file, then we'd be back to sharing
addresses in the address pool again.

But for now, these sizes seem small enough to go ahead with this.

Verified that no other DW_TAGs are produced into the .o file other than
subprograms and inlined_subroutines.

Oliver Stannard 652ec6ee89 Emit .eh_frame with relocations to functions, rather than sections
When LLVM emits DWARF call frame information, it currently creates a local,
section-relative symbol in the code section, which is pointed to by a
relocation on the .eh_frame section. However, for C++ we emit some functions in
section groups, and the SysV ABI has some rules to make it easier to remove
these sections
(http://www.sco.com/developers/gabi/latest/ch4.sheader.html#section_group_rules):

A symbol table entry with STB_LOCAL binding that is defined relative to one
of a group's sections, and that is contained in a symbol table section that is
not part of the group, must be discarded if the group members are discarded.
References to this symbol table entry from outside the group are not allowed.

This means that we need to use the function symbol for the relocation, not a
temporary symbol.

There was a comment in the code claiming that the local symbol was used to
avoid creating a relocation, but a relocation must be created anyway as the
code and CFI are in different sections.

David Blaikie 1dd573db45 DebugInfo: Remove DwarfDebug::CurrentFnArguments since we have to handle argument ordering of other arguments (abstract arguments) in the same way and already have code for that too.
While refactoring this code I was confused by both the name I had
introduced (addNonArgumentVariable... but it has all this logic to
handle argument numbering and keep things in order?) and by the
redundancy. Seems when I fixed the misordered inlined argument handling,
I didn't realize it was mostly redundant with the argument ordering code
(which I may've also written, I'm not sure). So let's just rely on the
more general case.

The only oddity in output this produces is that it means when we emit
all the variables for the current function, we don't track when we've
finished the argument variables and are about to start the local
variables and insert DW_AT_unspecified_parameters (for varargs
functions) there. Instead it ends up after the local variables, scopes,
etc. But this isn't invalid and doesn't cause DWARF consumers problems
that I know of... so we'll just go with that because it makes the code
nice & simple.

(though, let's see what the buildbots have to say about this - *crosses
fingers*)

There will be some cleanup commits to follow to remove the now trivial
wrappers, etc.

David Blaikie 49cfc8ca8e DebugInfo: Simplify/tidy/correct global variable decl/def emission handling.
This fixes a bug (introduced by fixing the IR emitted from Clang where
the definition of a static member would be scoped within the class,
rather than within its lexical decl context) where the definition of a
static variable would be placed inside a class.

It also improves source fidelity by scoping static class member
definitions inside the lexical decl context in which tehy are written
(eg: namespace n { class foo { static int i; } int foo::i; } - the
definition of 'i' will be within the namespace 'n' in the DWARF output
now).

Lastly, and the original goal, this reduces debug info size slightly
(and makes debug info easier to read, etc) by placing the definitions of
non-member global variables within their namespace, rather than using a
separate namespace-scoped declaration along with a definition at global
scope.

Based on patches and discussion with Frédéric.

Adrian Prantl 87b7eb9d0f Move the complex address expression out of DIVariable and into an extra
argument of the llvm.dbg.declare/llvm.dbg.value intrinsics.

Previously, DIVariable was a variable-length field that has an optional
reference to a Metadata array consisting of a variable number of
complex address expressions. In the case of OpPiece expressions this is
wasting a lot of storage in IR, because when an aggregate type is, e.g.,
SROA'd into all of its n individual members, the IR will contain n copies
of the DIVariable, all alike, only differing in the complex address
reference at the end.

By making the complex address into an extra argument of the
dbg.value/dbg.declare intrinsics, all of the pieces can reference the
same variable and the complex address expressions can be uniqued across
the CU, too.
Down the road, this will allow us to move other flags, such as
"indirection" out of the DIVariable, too.

The new intrinsics look like this:
declare void @llvm.dbg.declare(metadata %storage, metadata %var, metadata %expr)
declare void @llvm.dbg.value(metadata %storage, i64 %offset, metadata %var, metadata %expr)

This patch adds a new LLVM-local tag to DIExpressions, so we can detect
and pretty-print DIExpression metadata nodes.

What this patch doesn't do:

This patch does not touch the "Indirect" field in DIVariable; but moving
that into the expression would be a natural next step.

David Blaikie 32b0f365a2 Implement DW_TAG_subrange_type with DW_AT_count rather than DW_AT_upper_bound
This allows proper disambiguation of unbounded arrays and arrays of zero
bound ("struct foo { int x[]; };" and "struct foo { int x[0]; }"). GCC
instead produces an upper bound of -1 in the latter situation, but count
seems tidier. This way lower_bound is provided if it's not the language
default and count is provided if the count is known, otherwise it's
omitted. Simple.

If someone wants to look at rdar://problem/12566646 and see if this
change is acceptable to that bug/fix, that might be helpful (see the

David Blaikie e1c79749ca Disable the -gmlt optimization implemented in r218129 under Darwin due to issues with dsymutil.
r218129 omits DW_TAG_subprograms which have no inlined subroutines when
emitting -gmlt data. This makes -gmlt very low cost for -O0 builds.

Darwin's dsymutil reasonably considers a CU empty if it has no
subprograms (which occurs with the above optimization in -O0 programs
without any force_inline function calls) and drops the line table, CU,
and everything in this situation, making backtraces impossible.

Until dsymutil is modified to account for this, disable this
optimization on Darwin to preserve the desired functionality.
(see r218545, which should be reverted after this patch, for other
discussion/details)

Footnote:
In the long term, it doesn't look like this scheme (of simplified debug
info to describe inlining to enable backtracing) is tenable, it is far
too size inefficient for optimized code (the DW_TAG_inlined_subprograms,
even once compressed, are nearly twice as large as the line table
itself (also compressed)) and we'll be considering things like Cary's
two level line table proposal to encode all this information directly in
the line table.

David Blaikie 3a7ce252cc Omit DW_TAG_subprograms for subprograms without inlined subroutines when producing -gmlt data
To reduce the size of -gmlt data, skip the subprograms without any
inlined subroutines. Since we've now got the ability to make these
determinations in the backend (funnily enough - we added the flag so we
wouldn't produce ranges under -gmlt, but with this change we use the
flag, but go back to producing ranges under -gmlt).

Instead, just produce CU ranges to inform the consumer which parts of
the code are described by this CU's line table. Tools could inspect the
line table directly to compute the range, but the CU ranges only seem to
be about 0.5% of object/executable size, so I'm not too worried about
teaching llvm-symbolizer that trick just yet - it's certainly a possible
piece of future work.

Update an llvm-symbolizer test just to demonstrate that this schema is
acceptable there (if it wasn't, the compiler-rt tests would catch this,
but good to have an in-llvm-tree test for llvm-symbolizer's behavior
here)

Building the clang binary with -gmlt with this patch reduces the total
size of object files by 5.1% (5.56% without ranges) without compression
and the executable by 4.37% (4.75% without ranges).

David Blaikie 6e9477af8c DebugInfo: Fix ranges+gmlt test case to actually exercise the gmlt situation.
Originally this test case tested the specified behavior (that -gmlt
would not produce DW_AT_ranges and that when no CU DW_AT_ranges were
produced, no debug_ranges section (not even an empty list) would be
produced) but then the ranges emission code was improved not to create
ranges of a single element (instead favoring high_pc/low_pc) and so this
test case no longer exercised the -gmlt portion of the behavior.

This caused me some confusion when reading the comments and trying to
update this test case for future changes to -gmlt. I've made this test
resilient to those changes (by using the {{DW_TAG|NULL}} pattern to
block the end of the attribute search at the end of the CU's attribute
list without mandating that it must (or must not) be followed by another
tag (the future changes to -gmlt should produce no subprograms in this
CU))

Fix the test case to have two functions in distinct sections to force
the use of DW_AT_ranges.

David Blaikie fb0412f039 DebugInfo: Assert that any CU for which debug_loc lists are emitted, has at least one range.
This was coming in weird debug info that had variables (and hence
debug_locs) but was in GMLT mode (because it was missing the 13th field
of the compile_unit metadata) so no ranges were constructed. We should
always have at least one range for any CU with a debug_loc in it -
because the range should cover the debug_loc.

The assertion just ensures that the "!= 1" range case inside the
subsequent loop doesn't get entered for the case where there are no
ranges at all, which should never reach here in the first place.

llvm-svn: 214939
2014-08-06 00:21:25 +00:00
David Blaikie cabf54a313 DebugInfo: Fix a bunch of tests that, owing to their compile_unit metadata not including a 13th field, had some subtle behavior.
Without the 13th field, the "emission kind" field defaults to 0 (which
is not equal to either of the values of the emission kind enum (1 ==
full debug info, 2 == line tables only)).

In this particular instance, the comparison with "FullDebugInfo" was
done when adding elements to the ranges list - so for these test cases
no values were added to the ranges list.

This got weirder when emitting debug_loc entries as the addresses should
be relative to the range of the CU if the CU has only one range (the
reasonable assumption is that if we're emitting debug_loc lists for a CU
that CU has at least one range - but due to the above situation, it has
zero) so the ranges were emitted relative to the start of the section
rather than relative to the start of the CU's singular range.

Fix these tests by accounting for the difference in the description of
debug_loc entries (in some cases making the test ignorant to these
differences, in others adding the extra label difference expression,
etc) or the presence/absence of high/low_pc on the CU, and add the 13th
field to their CUs to enable proper "full debug info" emission here.

In a future commit I'll fix up a bunch of other test cases that are not
so rigorously depending on this behavior, but still doing similarly
weird things due to the missing 13th field.

Before this patch we had

David Blaikie 2f04011435 Recommit r212203: Don't try to construct debug LexicalScopes hierarchy for functions that do not have top level debug information.
Reverted by Eric Christopher (Thanks!) in r212203 after Bob Wilson
reported LTO issues. Duncan Exon Smith and Aditya Nandakumar helped
provide a reduced reproduction, though the failure wasn't too hard to
guess, and even easier with the example to confirm.

The assertion that the subprogram metadata associated with an
llvm::Function matches the scope data referenced by the DbgLocs on the
instructions in that function is not valid under LTO. In LTO, a C++
inline function might exist in multiple CUs and the subprogram metadata
nodes will refer to the same llvm::Function. In this case, depending on
the order of the CUs, the first intance of the subprogram metadata may
not be the one referenced by the instructions in that function and the
assertion will fail.

A test case (test/DebugInfo/cross-cu-linkonce-distinct.ll) is added, the
assertion removed and a comment added to explain this situation.

This was then reverted again in r213581 as it caused PR20367. The root
cause of this was the early exit in LiveDebugVariables meant that
spurious DBG_VALUE intrinsics that referenced dead variables were not
removed, causing an assertion/crash later on. The fix is to have
LiveDebugVariables strip all DBG_VALUE intrinsics in functions without
debug info as they're not needed anyway. Test case added to cover this
situation (that occurs when a debug-having function is inlined into a
nodebug function) in test/DebugInfo/X86/nodebug_with_debug_loc.ll

Original commit message:

If a function isn't actually in a CU's subprogram list in the debug info

The header contains an offset to the DWARF abbreviations for the CU. The offset

Oliver Stannard f7693f4c1f Emit DWARF3 call frame information when DWARF3+ debug info is requested
Currently, llvm always emits a DWARF CIE with a version of 1, even when emitting
DWARF 3 or 4, which both support CIE version 3. This patch makes it emit the
newer CIE version when we are emitting DWARF 3 or 4. This will not reduce
compatibility, as we already emit other DWARF3/4 features, and is worth doing as
the DWARF3 spec removed some ambiguities in the interpretation of call frame
information.

It also fixes a minor bug where the "return address" field of the CIE was
encoded as a ULEB128, which is only valid when the CIE version is 3. There are
no test changes for this, because (as far as I can tell) none of the platforms
that we test have a return address register with a DWARF register number >127.

Alexey Samsonov 0670cfaf01 [DWARF parser] Fix broken address ranges construction.
Previous algorithm for constructing [Address ranges]->[Compile Units]
mapping was wrong. It somewhat relied on the assumption that address ranges
for different compile units may not overlap. It is not so.
For example, two compile units may contain the definition of the same
linkonce_odr function. These definitions will be merged at link-time,
resulting in equivalent .debug_ranges entries for both these units

Instead of sorting and merging original address ranges (from .debug_ranges
and .debug_aranges), implement a different approach: save endpoints
of all ranges, and then use a sweep-line approach to construct
the desired mapping. If we find that certain address maps to
several compilation units, we just pick any of them.

Alexey Samsonov 8000e2734e Generate better location ranges for some register-described variables.
Don't terminate location ranges for register-described variables
at the end of machine basic block if this register is never modified
in the function body, except for the prologue and epilogue. Prologue
location is guessed by FrameSetup flags on MachineInstructions, while
epilogue location is deduced from debug locations of instructions
in the basic blocks ending with return instructions.

This patch is mostly targeted to fix non-trivial debug locations for
variables addressed via stack and frame pointers.

It is not really a generic fix. We can still produce poor debug info
for register-described variables if this register *is* modified somewhere
in the function, but in unrelated places. This might be the case for the debug
info in optimized binaries (e.g. for local variables in inlined functions).
LiveDebugVariables pass in CodeGen attempts to fix this problem by adjusting
DBG_VALUE instructions, but this pass is tied to greedy register allocator,
which is used in optimized builds only. Proper fix would likely involve
generalizing LiveDebugVariables to all register allocators. See more discussion
in http://reviews.llvm.org/D3933 review thread.

I'm proceeding with this patch to fix immediate severe problems and
important cases, e.g. fix completely broken debug info with AddressSanitizer
and fix PR19307 (missing debug info for by-value std::string arguments).

Evgeniy Stepanov 2be29929be Fix line numbers for code inlined from __nodebug__ functions.
Instructions from __nodebug__ functions don't have file:line
information even when inlined into no-nodebug functions. As a result,
intrinsics (SSE and other) from <*intrin.h> clang headers _never_
have file:line information.

With this change, an instruction without !dbg metadata gets one from
the call instruction when inlined.

These checks were accidentally skipping the 0x prefix in the hex
offsets, then cunningly ignoring the prefix in the use of those captured
values.

Except in the case of the unit length, where the match was only matching
the leading '0' before the x in the 0x prefix, then matching that
against the length. We can't actually express the length association
here, as the length field in the Compile Unit header does not include
the length field itself, but the length field in the pubnames section
/does/ include the size of the length field in the Compile Unit header -
so the two numbers are actually 4 bytes different. Just skip matching
that.

This was added to test that DW_AT_GNU_pubnames used sec_offset in DWARF4
and data4 in DWARF3 and below. Since then we've updated
DW_AT_GNU_pubnames to be a flag, rather than a section offset anyway.

Granted this still differs between DWARF 3 and DWARF 4
(FORM_flag_present versun FORM_flag) but it doesn't seem worthwhile
testing that codepath again here. It's covered adequately in many other
test cases.

And while I'm here, don't hardcode the byte size of the compile unit -
it's not relevant to this test and just makes it brittle if/when
anything changes in the way this CU is emitted.

David Blaikie bb6a4e2fea PR19388: DebugInfo: Emit dead arguments in their originally declared order.
Unused arguments were not being added to the argument list, but instead
treated as arbitrary scope variables. This meant they weren't carefully
added in the original argument order.

In this particular example, though, it turns out the argument is only
/mostly/ unused (well, actually it's entirely used, but in a specific
way). It's a struct that, due to ABI reasons, is decomposed into chunks
(exactly one chunk, since it has one member) and then passed. Since only
one of those chunks is used (SROA, etc, kill the original reconstitution
code) we don't have a location to describe the whole variable.

In this particular case, since the struct consists of just the one int,
once we have partial location information, this should have a location
that describes the entire variable (since the piece is the entirety of
the object).

And at some point we'll need to describe the location of even /entirely/
unused arguments so that they can at least be printed on function entry.

David Blaikie 19a8b90763 DebugInfo: Partial revert r209984 due to more cases where abstract DbgVariables do not have associated DIEs.
Along with a test case to demonstrate that due to inlining order there
are cases where abstract variable DIEs are not constructed since the
abstract subprogram was built due to a previous inlining that optimized
away those variables. This produces incorrect debug info (the 'missing'
abstract variable causes the inlined instance of that variable to be
emitted with a full description (name, line, file) rather than
referencing the abstract origin), but this commit at least ensures that
it doesn't crash...

llvm-svn: 210143

David Blaikie 23b4ecbff4 DebugInfo: Assert that DbgVariables have associated DIEs
This was previously committed in r209680 and reverted in r209683 after
it caused sanitizer builds to crash.

The issue seems to be that the DebugLoc associated with dbg.value IR
intrinsics isn't necessarily accurate. Instead, we duplicate the
DIVariables and add an InlinedAt field to them to record their
location.

We were using this InlinedAt field to compute the LexicalScope for the
variable, but not using it in the abstract DbgVariable construction and
mapping. This resulted in a formal parameter to the current concrete
function, correctly having no InlinedAt information, but incorrectly
having a DebugLoc that described an inlined location within the
function... thus an abstract DbgVariable was created for the variable,
but its DIE was never constructed (since the LexicalScope had no such
variable). This DbgVariable was silently ignored (by testing for a
non-null DIE on the abstract DbgVariable).

So, fix this by using the right scoping information when constructing
abstract DbgVariables.

In the long run, I suspect we want to undo the work that added this
second kind of location tracking and fix the places where the DebugLoc
propagation on the dbg.value intrinsic fails. This will shrink debug
info (by not duplicating DIVariables), make it more efficient (by not
having to construct new DIVariable metadata nodes to try to map back to
a single variable), and benefit all instructions.

But perhaps there are insurmountable issues with DebugLoc quality that
I'm unaware of... I just don't know how we can't /just keep the DebugLoc
from the dbg.declare to the dbg.values and never get this wrong/.

David Blaikie 3c2fff3fe6 DebugInfo: Lazily construct subprogram definition DIEs.
A further step to correctly emitting concrete out of line definitions
preceeding inlined instances of the same program.

To do this, emission of subprograms must be delayed until required since
we don't know which (abstract only (if there's no out of line
definition), concrete only (if there are no inlined instances), or both)
DIEs are required at the start of the module.

To reduce the test churn in the following commit that actually fixes the

David Blaikie f7221adb8e DebugInfo: Lazily attach definition attributes to definitions.
This is a precursor to fixing inlined debug info where the concrete,
out-of-line definition may preceed any inlined usage. To cope with this,
the attributes that may appear on the concrete definition or the
abstract definition are delayed until the end of the module. Then, if an
abstract definition was created, it is referenced (and no other
attributes are added to the out-of-line definition), otherwise the
attributes are added directly to the out-of-line definition.

In a couple of cases this causes not just reordering of attributes, but
reordering of types. When the creation of the attribute is delayed, if
that creation would create a type (such as for a DW_AT_type attribute)
then other top level DIEs may've been constructed during the delay,
causing the referenced type to be created and added after those
intervening DIEs. In the extreme case, in cross-cu-inlining.ll, this
actually causes the DW_TAG_basic_type for "int" to move from one CU to
another.

This was previously regressed/broken by r192749 (reverted due to this
issue in r192938) and I was about to break it again by accident with
some more invasive changes that deal with the subprogram lists. So to
avoid that and further issues - here's a test.

It's a pretty basic test - in both r192749 and my impending case, this
test would crash, but checking the basics (that we put a subprogram in
just one of the two CUs) seems like a good start.

We still get this wrong in weird ways if the linkonce-odr function
happens to not be identical in the metadata (because it's defined in two
different files (hence the # line directives in this test), etc) even
though it meets the language requirements (identical token stream) for
such a thing. That results in two subprogram DIEs, but only one of them
gets the parameter and high/low pc information, etc. We probably need to
use the DIRef infrastructure to deduplicate functions as we do types to
address this issue - or perhaps teach the BC linker to remove the
duplicate entries in subprogram lists?

David Blaikie 2f75351c02 DebugInfo: Generalize some tests to handle variations in attribute ordering.
In an effort to fix inlined debug info in situations where the out of

essence, definition-necessary attributes like DW_AT_low_pc/high_pc will

delayed to module end where they may either be added to the subprogram

This seems like a simple cleanup/improved consistency, but also helps
lay the foundation to fix the bug mentioned in the test case: concrete

Once we start deferring this choice until later, we won't have the

David Blaikie 2af1c805b4 PR19767: DebugInfo emission of pointer constants.
In refactoring DwarfUnit::isUnsignedDIType I restricted it to only work
on values with signedness (unsigned or signed), asserting on anything
else (which did uncover some bugs). But it turns out that we do need to
emit constants of signless data, such as pointer constants - only null
pointer constants are known to need this so far, but it's conceivable
that there might be non-null pointer constants at some point (hardcoded
address offsets for device drivers?).

This patch just uses 'unsigned' for signless data such as pointer
constants. Arguably we could use signless representations
(DW_FORM_dataN) instead, allowing a trinary result from isUnsignedDIType
(signed, unsigned, signless), but this seems reasonable for now.

The check in DwarfDebug::constructScopeDIE was meant to consider inlined
subroutines as any non-top-level scope that was a subprogram. Instead of
checking "not top level scope" it was checking if the /subprogram's/
scope was non-top-level.

Fix this and beef up a test case to demonstrate some of the missing
inlined_subroutines are no longer missing.

In the course of fixing this I also found that r208748 (with this fix)
found one /extra/ inlined_subroutine in concrete_out_of_line.ll due to
two inlined_subroutines having the same inlinedAt location. The previous
implementation was collapsing these into a single inlined subroutine.

I'm not sure what the original code was that created this .ll file so
I'm not sure if this actually happens in practice today. Since we
deliberately include column information to disambiguate two calls on the
same line, that may've addressed this bug in the frontend, but it's good
to know that workaround isn't necessary for this particular case
anymore.

This was reverted in r208642 due to regressions surrounding file changes
within lexical scopes causing inlining information to be lost.

The issue was in LexicalScopes::getOrCreateInlinedScope, where I was
previously testing "isLexicalBlock" which is false for
"DILexicalBlockFile" (a scope used to represent changes in the current
file name) and assuming it was then a function (breaking out of the
inlined scope path and reaching for the parent non-inlined scopes). By
inverting the condition and testing for "isSubprogram" the correct
behavior is attained.

(also found some weirdness in Clang, see r208742 when reducing this test
case - the resulting test case doesn't apply with the Clang fix, but
I've added a more realistic test case to inline-scopes.ll which does
reproduce the issue and demonstrate the fix)

For some impending improvements to debug info, LLVM will start assuming
that when the CU specifies llvm::DIBuilder::LineTablesOnly, the IR for
functions described by that CU will not include variables, types, etc.

(might be worth having some test coverage for GMLT + non-GMLT CUs,

This test was using the inliner and other optimizations to test a case
that's actually a bug anyway. Bug and possible fix/discussion described
here ( http://reviews.llvm.org/D3714 ).

But the functionality that was implemented along with this test is still
desired, so simplify the test to verify a more obvious/less wrong case
that the functionality addressed: looking through const sugar to the
underlying type when emitting a constant (so the constant is emitted as
signed/unsigned as appropriate depending on the signedness of the
underlying type).

Doesn't seem a good reason to duplicate this code (it was more literally
duplicated prior to r208494, and while the dataN code /does/ actually
fire in this case, it doesn't seem necessary (and the DWARF standard
recommends using udata/sdata pervasively instead of dataN, so as to

David Blaikie 899ae61fee Revert "Emit DW_AT_object_pointer once, on the declaration, for each function."
Breaks GDB buildbot
(http://lab.llvm.org:8011/builders/clang-x86_64-ubuntu-gdb-75/builds/14517)

GCC emits DW_AT_object_pointer /everywhere/ (declaration, abstract
definition, inlined subroutine), but it looks like GCC relies on it
being somewhere other than the declaration, at least. I'll experiment
further & can hopefully still remove it from the inlined_subroutine.

This reverts commit r207705.

They just don't need to be there - they're inherited from the abstract
definition. In theory I would like them to be inherited from the
declaration, but the DWARF standard doesn't quite say that... we can
probably do it anyway but I'm less confident about that so I'll leave it
for a separate commit.

David Blaikie 3b2a53a437 Emit DW_AT_object_pointer once, on the declaration, for each function.
This effectively reverts r164326, but adds some comments and
justification and ensures we /don't/ emit the DW_AT_object_pointer on
the (abstract and concrete) definitions. (while still preserving it on
standalone definitions involving ObjC Blocks)

This does increase the size of member function declarations from 7 to 11
bytes, unfortunately, but still seems like the Right Thing to do so that
callers that see only the declaration still have the information about
the object pointer. That said, I don't know what, if any, DWARF
consumers don't have a heuristic to guess this in the case of normal
C++ member functions - perhaps we can remove it entirely.

David Blaikie d8f0ac7b4a DwarfDebug: Omit DW_AT_object_pointer on inlined_subroutines
While refactoring out constructScopeDIE into two functions I realized we
were emitting DW_AT_object_pointer in the inlined subroutine when we
didn't need to (GCC doesn't, and the abstract subprogram definition has
the information already).

So here's the refactoring and the bug fix. This is one step of
refactoring to remove some subtle memory ownership semantics. It turns
out the original constructScopeDIE returned ownership in its return
value in some cases and not in others. The split into two functions now
separates those two semantics - further cleanup (unique_ptr, etc) will
follow.

Previously, when a variable was at a FrameIndex for any part of its

range and not the entire lexical scope of the variable. The included

David Blaikie 9c550ac4e7 DebugInfo: Support debug_loc under fission
Implement debug_loc.dwo, as well as llvm-dwarfdump support for dumping
this section.

Outlined in the DWARF5 spec and http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/DebugFission the
debug_loc.dwo section has more variation than the standard debug_loc,
allowing 3 different forms of entry (plus the end of list entry). GCC
seems to, and Clang certainly, only use one form, so I've just
implemented dumping support for that for now.

It wasn't immediately obvious that there was a good refactoring to share
the implementation of dumping support between debug_loc and
debug_loc.dwo, so they're separate for now - ideas welcome or I may come
back to it at some point.

As per a comment in the code, we could choose different forms that may
reduce the number of debug_addr entries we emit, but that will require
further study.

Eric Christopher 384f3feb2d Reapply DW_AT_low/high_pc patch:
Use the range machinery for DW_AT_ranges and DW_AT_high/lo_pc.

This commit moves us from a single range per subprogram to extending
    ranges if we are:

    a) In the same section, and
    b) In the same enclosing CU.

This means we have more fine grained ranges for compile units, and fewer
ranges overall when we have multiple functions in the same CU
adjacent to each other in the object file.

Also remove all of the earlier hacks around this functionality for
function sections etc. Also update all of the testcases to take into
    account the merging functionality.

with a fix for location entries in the debug_loc section:

Make sure that debug loc entries are relative to the low_pc
of the compile unit. This means that when we only have a single
range that the offset should be just relative to the low_pc
of the unit, for multiple ranges for a CU this means that we'll be
relative to 0 which we emit along with DW_AT_ranges.

This mostly shows up with linked binaries, so add a testcase with
multiple CUs so that our location is going to be offset of a CU
with a non-zero low_pc.

This removes an attribute (and more importantly, a relocation) from

There's still a few places we could shave off some more space here:

* use compilation dir of the underlying compilation unit (since all the
type units share that compilation dir - though this would be more
complicated in LTO cases where they don't (keep a map of compilation
  dir->line table header?))

* Remove some of the unnecessary header fields from the line table since
they're not needed in this situation (about 12 bytes per table).

David Blaikie e05274d7d9 DebugInfo: Do not rely on the compilation dir (index 0) for files in line tables shared between compilation units
When emitting assembly there's no support for emitting separate line
tables for each compilation unit - so LLVM emits .loc directives
producing a single line table.

Line tables have an implicit directory (index 0) equal to the
compilation directory (DW_AT_comp_dir) of the compilation unit that
references them.

If multiple compilation units (with possibly disparate compilation
directories) reference the same line table, we must avoid relying on
this ambiguous directory.

Achieve this my simply not setting the compilation directory on the line
table when we're in this situation (multiple units while emitting
assembly).

Eric Christopher 420569be04 Add support for hashing attributes with DW_FORM_block. This required
passing down an AsmPrinter instance so we could compute the size of
the block which could be target specific. All of the test cases in
the unittest don't have any target specific data so we can use a NULL
AsmPrinter there. This also depends upon block data being added as
integers.

We can now hash the entire fission-cu.ll compile unit so turn the
flag on there with the hash value.

Eric Christopher 4a74104933 Add a DIELoc class to cover the DW_FORM_exprloc set of expressions
alongside DIEBlock and replace uses accordingly. Use DW_FORM_exprloc
in DWARF4 and later code. Update testcases.

Adding a DIELoc instead of using extra forms inside DIEBlock so
that we can keep location expressions separate from other uses. No
direct use at the moment, however, it's not a lot of code and
using a separately named class keeps it somewhat more obvious
what's going on in various locations.

David Blaikie f1a6dea82c DebugInfo: Deduplicate entries in the fission address table
This broke in r185459 while TLS support was being generalized to handle
non-symbol TLS representations.

I thought about/tried having an enum rather than a bool to track the
TLS-ness of the address table entry, but namespaces and naming seemed
more hassle than it was worth for only one caller that needed to specify
this.

David Blaikie 60e6386b87 DebugInfo: Implement DW_AT_stmt_list for type units
Type units will share the statement list of their defining compile unit.
This is a tradeoff that reduces .o debug info size at the cost of some
linked debug info size (since the contents of those string tables won't
be deduplicated along with the type unit) which seems right for now.

Recommitting r201380 (reverted in r201389)
Recommitting r201351 and r201355 (reverted in r201351 and r201355)

We weren't emitting the an empty (header only) line table when the line
table was empty - this made the DWARF invalid (the compile unit would
point to the zero-size debug_lines section where there should've been an
empty line table but there was nothing at all). Fix that, and as a
consequence this works around/addresses PR18809.

Also, we emit a non-empty line table to workaround a darwin linker bug,
so XFAILing on darwin too.

Also, mark the test as 'REQUIRES: object-emission' because it does.

Debug Info: Type Units: Simplify type hashing using IR-provided unique
names.

What's good for LTO metadata size problems ought to be good for non-LTO
debug info size too, so let's rely on the same uniqueness in both cases.
If it's insufficient for non-LTO for whatever reason (since we now won't
be uniquing CU-local types or any C types - but these are likely to not
be the most significant contributors to type bloat) we should consider a
frontend solution that'll help both LTO and non-LTO alike, rather than
using DWARF-level DIE-hashing that only helps non-LTO debug info size.

It's also much simpler this way and benefits C++ even more since we can
deduplicate lexically separate definitions of the same C++ type since
they have the same mangled name.

other type units.

Originally committed as r197073 and reverted in r197079.

This simplifies reasoning about the code and enables simple navigation
from a skeleton to its full unit. (currently there are no type unit
skeletons, so the skeleton list doesn't have the same ID == index
property)

Eventually we should get rid of this ID and just store the labels we
need as the IDs are allowing this code to create difficult to
manage/understand associations (loops over non-skeletal units are
implicitly referencing their skeletal units during pub* emission, for
example). It may be necessary to have some kind of skeleton->full unit
association and a more direct pointer or similar device would be
preferable than an index.

Eric Christopher 33ff697cb1 In Dwarf 3 (and Dwarf 2) attributes whose value are offsets into a
section use the form DW_FORM_data4 whilst in Dwarf 4 and later they
use the form DW_FORM_sec_offset.

This patch updates the places where such attributes are generated to
use the appropriate form depending on the Dwarf version. The DIE entries
affected have the following tags:
DW_AT_stmt_list, DW_AT_ranges, DW_AT_location, DW_AT_GNU_pubnames,
DW_AT_GNU_pubtypes, DW_AT_GNU_addr_base, DW_AT_GNU_ranges_base

It also adds a hidden command line option "--dwarf-version=<uint>"
to llc which allows the version of Dwarf to be generated to override
what is specified in the metadata; this makes it possible to update
existing tests to check the debugging information generated for both
Dwarf 4 (the default) and Dwarf 3 using the same metadata.

This failed to achieve the desired goal because the header in a unit
specifies the length of the unit without the length element of the

We add a map in DwarfDebug to map MDNodes that are shareable across CUs to the
corresponding DIEs: MDTypeNodeToDieMap. These DIEs can be shared across CUs,
that is why we keep the maps in DwarfDebug instead of CompileUnit.

We make the assumption that if a DIE is not added to an owner yet, we assume
it belongs to the current CU. Since DIEs for the type system are added to
their owners immediately after creation, and other DIEs belong to the current
CU, the assumption should be true.

A testing case is added to show that we only create a single DIE for a type
MDNode and we use ref_addr to refer to the type DIE.

We also add a testing case to show ref_addr relocations for non-darwin

Andrew Trick e97d8d6dde Enable MI Sched for x86.
This changes the SelectionDAG scheduling preference to source
order. Soon, the SelectionDAG scheduler can be bypassed saving
a nice chunk of compile time.

Performance differences that result from this change are often a
consequence of register coalescing. The register coalescer is far from
perfect. Bugs can be filed for deficiencies.

On x86 SandyBridge/Haswell, the source order schedule is often
preserved, particularly for small blocks.

Register pressure is generally improved over the SD scheduler's ILP
mode. However, we are still able to handle large blocks that require
latency hiding, unlike the SD scheduler's BURR mode. MI scheduler also
attempts to discover the critical path in single-block loops and
adjust heuristics accordingly.

The MI scheduler relies on the new machine model. This is currently
unimplemented for AVX, so we may not be generating the best code yet.

Unit tests are updated so they don't depend on SD scheduling heuristics.

infinitely recursing trying to create the member function DIE)
9) once the type is constructed, add the member function to it
10) now the members are out of order (the member function being defined
is listed as the last member, even though it was declared as the first)

To avoid this, construct the context of the subprogram DIE before we
query to see if it exists. That way we never end up creating it before
creating its context and ending up in this situation.

Alternatively, the type construction that visits/builds all the members
could call something like getOrCreateSubprogram, but that doesn't ever
do the "add to context" step. Then the type building code would always
be responsible for adding members (and the subprogram "addToContextDIE"
would no-op because the context building would have added the subprogram
declaration to the type/context DIE already).

(the test cases updated were overly-sensitive to offsets or abbreviation
numbers. We don't have a nice way to make these tests more robust as yet
- multiline FileCheck matches would be required)

Richard Mitton c250824772 Fixed a bug with section names containing special characters.
Changed the dwarf aranges code to not use getLabelEndName, as it turns out it's not reliable to call that given user-defined section names. Section names can have characters in that aren't representable as symbol names.

The dwarf-aranges test case has been updated to include a special character, to check this.

This fixes pr17416.

Alexey Samsonov 4436bf03e9 Remove wild .debug_aranges entries generated from unimportant labels
r191052 added emitting .debug_aranges to Clang, but this
functionality is broken: it uses all MC labels added in DWARF Asm
printer, including the labels for build relocations between
different DWARF sections, like .Lsection_line or .Ldebug_loc0.

As a result, if any DIE .debug_info would contain "DW_AT_location=0x123"
attribute, .debug_aranges would also contain a range starting from 0x123,
breaking tools that rely on this section.

This patch fixes this by using only MC labels that corresponds to the
addresses in the user program.

Richard Mitton 089ed89e76 Fixed debug_aranges handling for common symbols.
The size of common symbols is now tracked correctly, so they can be listed in the arange section without needing knowledge of other following symbols.
