The ftrace selftest code has a trace_direct_tramp() function which it
uses as a direct call trampoline. This happens to work on x86, since the
direct call's return address is in the usual place, and can be returned
to via a RET, but in general the calling convention for direct calls is
different from regular function calls, and requires a trampoline written
in assembly.
On s390, regular function calls place the return address in %r14, and an
ftrace patch-site in an instrumented function places the trampoline's
return address (which is within the instrumented function) in %r0,
preserving the original %r14 value in-place. As a regular C function
will return to the address in %r14, using a C function as the trampoline
results in the trampoline returning to the caller of the instrumented
function, skipping the body of the instrumented function.
Note that the s390 issue is not detcted by the ftrace selftest code, as
the instrumented function is trivial, and returning back into the caller
happens to be equivalent.
On arm64, regular function calls place the return address in x30, and
an ftrace patch-site in an instrumented function saves this into r9
and places the trampoline's return address (within the instrumented
function) in x30. A regular C function will return to the address in
x30, but will not restore x9 into x30. Consequently, using a C function
as the trampoline results in returning to the trampoline's return
address having corrupted x30, such that when the instrumented function
returns, it will return back into itself.
To avoid future issues in this area, remove the trace_direct_tramp()
function, and require that each architecture with direct calls provides
a stub trampoline, named ftrace_stub_direct_tramp. This can be written
to handle the architecture's trampoline calling convention, and in
future could be used elsewhere (e.g. in the ftrace ops sample, to
measure the overhead of direct calls), so we may as well always build it
in.

Direct called trampolines can be called in two ways:
- either from the ftrace callsite. In this case, they do not access any
struct ftrace_regs nor pt_regs
- Or, if a ftrace ops is also attached, from the end of a ftrace
trampoline. In this case, the call_direct_funcs ops is in charge of
setting the direct call trampoline's address in a struct ftrace_regs
Since:
commit 9705bc7096 ("ftrace: pass fregs to arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller()")
The later case no longer requires a full pt_regs. It only needs a struct
ftrace_regs so DIRECT_CALLS can work with both WITH_ARGS or WITH_REGS.
With architectures like arm64 already abandoning WITH_REGS in favor of
WITH_ARGS, it's important to have DIRECT_CALLS work WITH_ARGS only.

All direct calls are now registered using the register_ftrace_direct API
so each ops can jump to only one direct-called trampoline.
By storing the direct called trampoline address directly in the ops we
can save one hashmap lookup in the direct call ops and implement arm64
direct calls on top of call ops.

A common pattern when using the ftrace_direct_multi API is to unregister
the ops and also immediately free its filter. We've noticed it's very
easy for users to miss calling ftrace_free_filter().
This adds a "free_filters" argument to unregister_ftrace_direct_multi()
to both remind the user they should free filters and also to make their
life easier.

Architectures without dynamic ftrace trampolines incur an overhead when
multiple ftrace_ops are enabled with distinct filters. in these cases,
each call site calls a common trampoline which uses
ftrace_ops_list_func() to iterate over all enabled ftrace functions, and
so incurs an overhead relative to the size of this list (including RCU
protection overhead).
Architectures with dynamic ftrace trampolines avoid this overhead for
call sites which have a single associated ftrace_ops. In these cases,
the dynamic trampoline is customized to branch directly to the relevant
ftrace function, avoiding the list overhead.
On some architectures it's impractical and/or undesirable to implement
dynamic ftrace trampolines. For example, arm64 has limited branch ranges
and cannot always directly branch from a call site to an arbitrary
address (e.g. from a kernel text address to an arbitrary module
address). Calls from modules to core kernel text can be indirected via
PLTs (allocated at module load time) to address this, but the same is
not possible from calls from core kernel text.
Using an indirect branch from a call site to an arbitrary trampoline is
possible, but requires several more instructions in the function
prologue (or immediately before it), and/or comes with far more complex
requirements for patching.
Instead, this patch adds a new option, where an architecture can
associate each call site with a pointer to an ftrace_ops, placed at a
fixed offset from the call site. A shared trampoline can recover this
pointer and call ftrace_ops::func() without needing to go via
ftrace_ops_list_func(), avoiding the associated overhead.
This avoids issues with branch range limitations, and avoids the need to
allocate and manipulate dynamic trampolines, making it far simpler to
implement and maintain, while having similar performance
characteristics.
Note that this allows for dynamic ftrace_ops to be invoked directly from
an architecture's ftrace_caller trampoline, whereas existing code forces
the use of ftrace_ops_get_list_func(), which is in part necessary to
permit the ftrace_ops to be freed once unregistered *and* to avoid
branch/address-generation range limitation on some architectures (e.g.
where ops->func is a module address, and may be outside of the direct
branch range for callsites within the main kernel image).
The CALL_OPS approach avoids this problems and is safe as:
* The existing synchronization in ftrace_shutdown() using
ftrace_shutdown() using synchronize_rcu_tasks_rude() (and
synchronize_rcu_tasks()) ensures that no tasks hold a stale reference
to an ftrace_ops (e.g. in the middle of the ftrace_caller trampoline,
or while invoking ftrace_ops::func), when that ftrace_ops is
unregistered.
Arguably this could also be relied upon for the existing scheme,
permitting dynamic ftrace_ops to be invoked directly when ops->func is
in range, but this will require additional logic to handle branch
range limitations, and is not handled by this patch.
* Each callsite's ftrace_ops pointer literal can hold any valid kernel
address, and is updated atomically. As an architecture's ftrace_caller
trampoline will atomically load the ops pointer then dereference
ops->func, there is no risk of invoking ops->func with a mismatches
ops pointer, and updates to the ops pointer do not require special
care.
A subsequent patch will implement architectures support for arm64. There
should be no functional change as a result of this patch alone.

For Anolis KABI reason, we cannot add ops_func field directly (there is
only one reserved field in struct ftrace_ops and we need it for
direct_call in future). Since now (and the latest upstream) ops_func is
only assigned with bpf_tramp_ftrace_ops_func(), we add a flag
FTRACE_OPS_FL_OPS_FUNC_CK_RESERVED to ops->flags instead, and call the
function directly.

ftrace_regs which is entirely distinct from pt_regs. In preparation for
this, we need to minimize the use of pt_regs to where strictly necessary
in the core ftrace code.
This patch adds new ftrace_regs_{get,set}_*() helpers which can be used
to manipulate ftrace_regs. When CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS=y,
these can always be used on any ftrace_regs, and when
CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS=n these can be used when regs are
available. A new ftrace_regs_has_args(fregs) helper is added which code
can use to check when these are usable.

This patch changes the prototype of arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller() to
take ftrace_regs rather than pt_regs, and moves the extraction of the
pt_regs into arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller().
On x86, arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller() can be used even when
CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS=n, and <linux/ftrace.h> defines
struct ftrace_regs. Due to this, it's necessary to define
arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller() as a macro to avoid using an incomplete
type. I've also moved the body of arch_ftrace_set_direct_caller() after
the CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS=y defineidion of struct
ftrace_regs.
There should be no functional change as a result of this patch.

IPMODIFY (livepatch) and DIRECT (bpf trampoline) ops are both important
users of ftrace. It is necessary to allow them work on the same function
at the same time.
First, DIRECT ops no longer specify IPMODIFY flag. Instead, DIRECT flag is
handled together with IPMODIFY flag in __ftrace_hash_update_ipmodify().
Then, a callback function, ops_func, is added to ftrace_ops. This is used
by ftrace core code to understand whether the DIRECT ops can share with an
IPMODIFY ops. To share with IPMODIFY ops, the DIRECT ops need to implement
the callback function and adjust the direct trampoline accordingly.
If DIRECT ops is attached before the IPMODIFY ops, ftrace core code calls
ENABLE_SHARE_IPMODIFY_PEER on the DIRECT ops before registering the
IPMODIFY ops.
If IPMODIFY ops is attached before the DIRECT ops, ftrace core code calls
ENABLE_SHARE_IPMODIFY_SELF in __ftrace_hash_update_ipmodify. Owner of the
DIRECT ops may return 0 if the DIRECT trampoline can share with IPMODIFY,
so error code otherwise. The error code is propagated to
register_ftrace_direct_multi so that onwer of the DIRECT trampoline can
handle it properly.

Adding interface to register multiple direct functions
within single call. Adding following functions:

The register_ftrace_direct_multi registers direct function (addr)
with all functions in ops filter. The ops filter can be updated
before with ftrace_set_filter_ip calls.
All requested functions must not have direct function currently
registered, otherwise register_ftrace_direct_multi will fail.
The unregister_ftrace_direct_multi unregisters ops related direct
functions.

We don't need special hook for graph tracer entry point,
but instead we can use graph_ops::func function to install
the return_hooker.
This moves the graph tracing setup _before_ the direct
trampoline prepares the stack, so the return_hooker will
be called when the direct trampoline is finished.
This simplifies the code, because we don't need to take into
account the direct trampoline setup when preparing the graph
tracer hooker and we can allow function graph tracer on entries
registered with direct trampoline.

When CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS is available, the ftrace call
will be able to set the ip of the calling function. This will improve the
performance of live kernel patching where it does not need all the regs to
be stored just to change the instruction pointer.
If all archs that support live kernel patching also support
HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS, then the architecture specific function
klp_arch_set_pc() could be made generic.
It is possible that an arch can support HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS but
not HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_REGS and then have access to live patching.

Currently, the only way to get access to the registers of a function via a
ftrace callback is to set the "FL_SAVE_REGS" bit in the ftrace_ops. But as this
saves all regs as if a breakpoint were to trigger (for use with kprobes), it
is expensive.
The regs are already saved on the stack for the default ftrace callbacks, as
that is required otherwise a function being traced will get the wrong
arguments and possibly crash. And on x86, the arguments are already stored
where they would be on a pt_regs structure to use that code for both the
regs version of a callback, it makes sense to pass that information always
to all functions.
If an architecture does this (as x86_64 now does), it is to set
HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS, and this will let the generic code that it
could have access to arguments without having to set the flags.
This also includes having the stack pointer being saved, which could be used
for accessing arguments on the stack, as well as having the function graph
tracer not require its own trampoline!

In preparation to have arguments of a function passed to callbacks attached
to functions as default, change the default callback prototype to receive a
struct ftrace_regs as the forth parameter instead of a pt_regs.
For callbacks that set the FL_SAVE_REGS flag in their ftrace_ops flags, they
will now need to get the pt_regs via a ftrace_get_regs() helper call. If
this is called by a callback that their ftrace_ops did not have a
FL_SAVE_REGS flag set, it that helper function will return NULL.
This will allow the ftrace_regs to hold enough just to get the parameters
and stack pointer, but without the worry that callbacks may have a pt_regs
that is not completely filled.

Inspecting the data structures of the function graph tracer, I found that
the overrun value is unsigned long, which is 8 bytes on a 64 bit machine,
and not only that, the depth is an int (4 bytes). The overrun can be simply
an unsigned int (4 bytes) and pack the ftrace_graph_ret structure better.
The depth is moved up next to the func, as it is used more often with func,
and improves cache locality.

Now that all callbacks are recursion safe, reverse the meaning of the
RECURSION flag and rename it from RECURSION_SAFE to simply RECURSION.
Now only callbacks that request to have recursion protecting it will
have the added trampoline to do so.

use the ftrace_ops_assist_func.

Currently, if a callback is registered to a ftrace function and its
ftrace_ops does not have the RECURSION flag set, it is encapsulated in a
helper function that does the recursion for it.
Really, all the callbacks should have their own recursion protection for
performance reasons. But they should not all implement their own. Move the
recursion helpers to global headers, so that all callbacks can use them.

Symbols are needed for tools to describe instruction addresses. Pages
allocated for ftrace's purposes need symbols to be created for them.
Add such symbols to be visible via /proc/kallsyms.

I was able to trigger it on other machines, when I added to the kernel
command line of both "ftrace=function" and "trace_options=func_stack_trace".
The cause is the "ftrace=function" would register the function tracer
and create a trampoline, and it will set it as executable and
read-only. Then the "trace_options=func_stack_trace" would then update
the same trampoline to include the stack tracer version of the function
tracer. But since the trampoline already exists, it updates it with
text_poke_bp(). The problem is that text_poke_bp() called while
system_state == SYSTEM_BOOTING, it will simply do a memcpy() and not
the page mapping, as it would think that the text is still read-write.
But in this case it is not, and we take a fault and crash.
Instead, lets keep the ftrace trampolines read-write during boot up,
and then when the kernel executable text is set to read-only, the
ftrace trampolines get set to read-only as well.

Instead of having all the sysctl handlers deal with user pointers, which
is rather hairy in terms of the BPF interaction, copy the input to and
from userspace in common code. This also means that the strings are
always NUL-terminated by the common code, making the API a little bit
safer.
As most handler just pass through the data to one of the common handlers
a lot of the changes are mechnical.

kernel tracing, as it disables all that it patched. If a ftrace_ops
is registered to ftrace with the PERMANENT flag set, it will prevent
ftrace_enabled from being disabled, and if ftrace_enabled is already
disabled, it will prevent a ftrace_ops with PREMANENT flag set from
being registered.
- New register_ftrace_direct(). As eBPF would like to register its own
trampolines to be called by the ftrace nop locations directly,
without going through the ftrace trampoline, this function has been
added. This allows for eBPF trampolines to live along side of
ftrace, perf, kprobe and live patching. It also utilizes the ftrace
enabled_functions file that keeps track of functions that have been
modified in the kernel, to allow for security auditing.
- Allow for kernel internal use of ftrace instances. Subsystems in
the kernel can now create and destroy their own tracing instances
which allows them to have their own tracing buffer, and be able
to record events without worrying about other users from writing over
their data.
- New seq_buf_hex_dump() that lets users use the hex_dump() in their
seq_buf usage.
- Notifications now added to tracing_max_latency to allow user space
to know when a new max latency is hit by one of the latency tracers.

When CONFIG_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_DIRECT_CALLS is not set it's best to
have the stub functions return ENOTSUPP instead of ENODEV,
otherwise ENODEV is a valid error when ip is incorrect which is
indistinguishable from ftrace not compiled in.

If a direct ftrace callback is at a location that does not have any other
ftrace helpers attached to it, it is possible to simply just change the
text to call the new caller (if the architecture supports it). But this
requires special architecture code. Currently, modify_ftrace_direct() uses a
trick to add a stub ftrace callback to the location forcing it to call the
ftrace iterator. Then it can change the direct helper to call the new
function in C, and then remove the stub. Removing the stub will have the
location now call the new location that the direct helper is using.
The new helper function does the registering the stub trick, but is a weak
function, allowing an architecture to override it to do something a bit more
direct.

Add a new function modify_ftrace_direct() that will allow a user to update
an existing direct caller to a new trampoline, without missing hits due to
unregistering one and then adding another.

As testing for direct calls from the function graph tracer adds a little
overhead (which is a lot when tracing every function), add a counter that
can be used to test if function_graph tracer needs to test for a direct
caller or not.
It would have been nicer if we could use a static branch, but the static
branch logic fails when used within the function graph tracer trampoline.

As function_graph tracer modifies the return address to insert a trampoline
to trace the return of a function, it must be aware of a direct caller, as
when it gets called, the function's return address may not be at on the
stack where it expects. It may have to see if that return address points to
the a direct caller and adjust if it is.

Add the start of the functionality to allow other trampolines to use the
ftrace mcount/fentry/nop location. This adds two new functions:
register_ftrace_direct() and unregister_ftrace_direct()
Both take two parameters: the first is the instruction address of where the
mcount/fentry/nop exists, and the second is the trampoline to have that
location called.
This will handle cases where ftrace is already used on that same location,
and will make it still work, where the registered direct called trampoline
will get called after all the registered ftrace callers are handled.
Currently, it will not allow for IP_MODIFY functions to be called at the
same locations, which include some kprobes and live kernel patching.
At this point, no architecture supports this. This is only the start of
implementing the framework.

When using patchable-function-entry, the compiler will record the
callsites into a section named "__patchable_function_entries" rather
than "__mcount_loc". Let's abstract this difference behind a new
FTRACE_CALLSITE_SECTION, so that architectures don't have to handle this
explicitly (e.g. with custom module linker scripts).
As parisc currently handles this explicitly, it is fixed up accordingly,
with its custom linker script removed. Since FTRACE_CALLSITE_SECTION is
only defined when DYNAMIC_FTRACE is selected, the parisc module loading
code is updated to only use the definition in that case. When
DYNAMIC_FTRACE is not selected, modules shouldn't have this section, so
this removes some redundant work in that case.
To make sure that this is keep up-to-date for modules and the main
kernel, a comment is added to vmlinux.lds.h, with the existing ifdeffery
simplified for legibility.
I built parisc generic-{32,64}bit_defconfig with DYNAMIC_FTRACE enabled,
and verified that the section made it into the .ko files for modules.

Architectures may need to perform special initialization of ftrace
callsites, and today they do so by special-casing ftrace_make_nop() when
the expected branch address is MCOUNT_ADDR. In some cases (e.g. for
patchable-function-entry), we don't have an mcount-like symbol and don't
want a synthetic MCOUNT_ADDR, but we may need to perform some
initialization of callsites.
To make it possible to separate initialization from runtime
modification, and to handle cases without an mcount-like symbol, this
patch adds an optional ftrace_init_nop() function that architectures can
implement, which does not pass a branch address.
Where an architecture does not provide ftrace_init_nop(), we will fall
back to the existing behaviour of calling ftrace_make_nop() with
MCOUNT_ADDR.
At the same time, ftrace_code_disable() is renamed to
ftrace_nop_initialize() to make it clearer that it is intended to
intialize a callsite into a disabled state, and is not for disabling a
callsite that has been runtime enabled. The kerneldoc description of rec
arguments is updated to cover non-mcount callsites.

Livepatch uses ftrace for redirection to new patched functions. It means
that if ftrace is disabled, all live patched functions are disabled as
well. Toggling global 'ftrace_enabled' sysctl thus affect it directly.
It is not a problem per se, because only administrator can set sysctl
values, but it still may be surprising.
Introduce PERMANENT ftrace_ops flag to amend this. If the
FTRACE_OPS_FL_PERMANENT is set on any ftrace ops, the tracing cannot be
disabled by disabling ftrace_enabled. Equally, a callback with the flag
set cannot be registered if ftrace_enabled is disabled.
