Dehao Chen 1ce8d6ca59 Add -debug-info-for-profiling to emit more debug info for sample pgo profile collection
Summary:
SamplePGO binaries built with -gmlt to collect profile. The current -gmlt debug info is limited, and we need some additional info:

* start line of all subprograms
* linkage name of all subprograms
* standalone subprograms (functions that has neither inlined nor been inlined)

This patch adds these information to the -gmlt binary. The impact on speccpu2006 binary size (size increase comparing with -g0 binary, also includes data for -g binary, which does not change with this patch):

Teresa Johnson 2d384ac381 Don't create a comdat group for a dropped def with initializer
Non-prevailing weak/linkonce odr symbols will be dropped by ThinLTO to
available_externally when possible. If they had an initializer in the
global_ctors list, a comdat group was being created. This code
already had logic to skip available_externally defs, but now the
EliminateAvailableExternally pass will drop these symbols to
declarations earlier. Change the check to skip all declarations for
linker (which includes available_externally along with declarations).

Zachary Turner 629cb7d8cc [CodeView] Finish decoupling TypeDatabase from TypeDumper.
Previously the type dumper itself was passed around to a lot of different
places and manipulated in ways that were more appropriate on the type
database. For example, the entire TypeDumper was passed into the symbol
dumper, when all the symbol dumper wanted to do was lookup the name of a
TypeIndex so it could print it. That's what the TypeDatabase is for --
mapping type indices to names.

Another example is how if the user runs llvm-pdbdump with the option to
dump symbols but not types, we still have to visit all types so that we
can print minimal information about the type of a symbol, but just without
dumping full symbol records. The way we did this before is by hacking it
up so that we run everything through the type dumper with a null printer,
so that the output goes to /dev/null. But really, we don't need to dump
anything, all we want to do is build the type database. Since
TypeDatabaseVisitor now exists independently of TypeDumper, we can do
this. We just build a custom visitor callback pipeline that includes a
database visitor but not a dumper.

All the hackery around printers etc goes away. After this patch, we could
probably even delete the entire CVTypeDumper class since really all it is
at this point is a thin wrapper that hides the details of how to build a
useful visitation pipeline. It's not a priority though, so CVTypeDumper
remains for now.

After this patch we will be able to easily plug in a different style of
type dumper by only implementing the proper visitation methods to dump
one-line output and then sticking it on the pipeline.

Zachary Turner a9054ddd9c [CodeView/PDB] Rename a bunch of files.
We were starting to get some name clashes between llvm-pdbdump
and the common CodeView framework, so I took this opportunity
to rename a bunch of files to more accurately describe their
usage. This also helps in llvm-pdbdump to distinguish
between different files and whether they are used for pretty
dump mode or raw dump mode.

Zachary Turner c640b76db5 [CodeView] Add TypeDatabase class.
This creates a centralized class in which to store type records.
It stores types as an array of entries, which matches the
notion of a type stream being a topologically sorted DAG.
Logic to build up such a database was already being used in
CVTypeDumper, so CVTypeDumper is now updated to to read from
a TypeDatabase which is filled out by an earlier visitor in
the pipeline.

Adrian Prantl bceaaa9643 [IR] Remove the DIExpression field from DIGlobalVariable.
This patch implements PR31013 by introducing a
DIGlobalVariableExpression that holds a pair of DIGlobalVariable and
DIExpression.

Currently, DIGlobalVariables holds a DIExpression. This is not the
best way to model this:

(1) The DIGlobalVariable should describe the source level variable,
    not how to get to its location.

(2) It makes it unsafe/hard to update the expressions when we call
    replaceExpression on the DIGLobalVariable.

(3) It makes it impossible to represent a global variable that is in
    more than one location (e.g., a variable with multiple
    DW_OP_LLVM_fragment-s). We also moved away from attaching the
    DIExpression to DILocalVariable for the same reasons.

This reapplies r289902 with additional testcase upgrades and a change
to the Bitcode record for DIGlobalVariable, that makes upgrading the
old format unambiguous also for variables without DIExpressions.

My plan of record is to roll the planned follow-up patch that adds a
unit: field to DIGlobalVariable into this patch before recomitting.
This way we only need one Bitcode upgrade for both changes (with a
version flag in the bitcode record to safely distinguish the record
formats).

Adrian Prantl 8fafb8d378 Fix LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece in DWARF expressions.
LLVM's use of DW_OP_bit_piece is incorrect and a based on a
misunderstanding of the wording in the DWARF specification. The offset
argument of DW_OP_bit_piece refers to the offset into the location
that is on the top of the DWARF expression stack, and not an offset
into the source variable. This has since also been clarified in the
DWARF specification.

This patch fixes all uses of DW_OP_bit_piece to emit the correct
offset and simplifies the DwarfExpression class to semi-automaticaly
emit empty DW_OP_pieces to adjust the offset of the source variable,
thus simplifying the code using DwarfExpression.

While this is an incompatible bugfix, in practice I don't expect this
to be much of a problem since LLVM's old interpretation and the
correct interpretation of DW_OP_bit_piece differ only when there are
gaps in the fragmented locations of the described variables or if
individual fragments are smaller than a byte. LLDB at least won't
interpret locations with gaps in them because is has no way to present
undefined bits in a variable, and there is a high probability that an
old-form expression will be malformed when interpreted correctly,
because the DW_OP_bit_piece offset will be outside of the location at
the top of the stack.

As a nice side-effect, this patch enables us to use a more efficient
encoding for subregisters: In order to express a sub-register at a
non-zero offset we now use a DW_OP_bit_piece instead of shifting the
value into place manually.

This patch also adds missing test coverage for code paths that weren't
exercised before.

This code is backed by the AsmPrinter code that emits DWARF for the actual compiler.

While adding unit tests it was discovered that DIEValue that used DIEEntry as their values had bugs where DW_FORM_ref1, DW_FORM_ref2, DW_FORM_ref8, and DW_FORM_ref_udata forms were not supported. These are all now supported. Added support for DW_FORM_string so we can emit inlined C strings.

Centralized the code to unique abbreviations into a new DIEAbbrevSet class and made both the dwarfgen::Generator and the llvm::DwarfFile classes use the new class.

Fixed comments in the llvm::DIE class so that the Offset is known to be the compile/type unit offset.

DIEInteger now supports more DW_FORM values.

There are also unit tests that cover:

Encoding and decoding all form types and values
Encoding and decoding all reference types (DW_FORM_ref1, DW_FORM_ref2, DW_FORM_ref4, DW_FORM_ref8, DW_FORM_ref_udata, DW_FORM_ref_addr) including cross compile unit references with that go forward one compile unit and backward on compile unit.

Adrian Prantl 941fa7588b [DIExpression] Introduce a dedicated DW_OP_LLVM_fragment operation
so we can stop using DW_OP_bit_piece with the wrong semantics.

The entire back story can be found here:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-commits/Week-of-Mon-20161114/405934.html

The gist is that in LLVM we've been misinterpreting DW_OP_bit_piece's
offset field to mean the offset into the source variable rather than
the offset into the location at the top the DWARF expression stack. In
order to be able to fix this in a subsequent patch, this patch
introduces a dedicated DW_OP_LLVM_fragment operation with the
semantics that we used to apply to DW_OP_bit_piece, which is what we
actually need while inside of LLVM. This patch is complete with a
bitcode upgrade for expressions using the old format. It does not yet
fix the DWARF backend to use DW_OP_bit_piece correctly.

Implementation note: We discussed several options for implementing
this, including reserving a dedicated field in DIExpression for the
fragment size and offset, but using an custom operator at the end of
the expression works just fine and is more efficient because we then
only pay for it when we need it.

Greg Clayton 35630c3357 This change removes the dependency on DwarfDebug that was used for DW_FORM_ref_addr by making a new DIEUnit class in DIE.cpp.
The DIEUnit class represents a compile or type unit and it owns the unit DIE as an instance variable. This allows anyone with a DIE, to get the unit DIE, and then get back to its DIEUnit without adding any new ivars to the DIE class. Why was this needed? The DIE class has an Offset that is always the CU relative DIE offset, not the "offset in debug info section" as was commented in the header file (the comment has been corrected). This is great for performance because most DIE references are compile unit relative and this means most code that accessed the DIE's offset didn't need to make it into a compile unit relative offset because it already was. When we needed to emit a DW_FORM_ref_addr though, we needed to find the absolute offset of the DIE by finding the DIE's compile/type unit. This class did have the absolute debug info/type offset and could be added to the CU relative offset to compute the absolute offset. With this change we can easily get back to a DIE's DIEUnit which will have this needed offset. Prior to this is required having a DwarfDebug and required calling:

DwarfCompileUnit *DwarfDebug::lookupUnit(const DIE *CU) const;
Now we can use the DIEUnit class to do so without needing DwarfDebug. All clients now use DIEUnit objects (the DwarfDebug stack and the DwarfLinker). A follow on patch for the DWARF generator will also take advantage of this.

Adrian Prantl 3502f2089c Emit the DW_AT_type for a C++ static member definition
if it is more specific than the one in its DW_AT_specification.

If a static member is an array, the translation unit containing the
member definition may have a more specific type (including its length)
than TUs only seeing the class declaration. This patch adds a
DW_AT_type to the member's DW_TAG_variable in addition to the
DW_AT_specification in these cases. The member type in the
DW_AT_specification still shows the more generic type (without the
length) to avoid defeating type uniquing.

The DWARF standard discourages “duplicating” a DW_AT_type in a member
variable definition but doesn’t explicitly forbid it. Having the more
specific type (with the array length) available is what allows the
debugger to print the contents of a static array member variable.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 1872096f1e CodeGen: Give MachineBasicBlock::reverse_iterator a handle to the current MI
Now that MachineBasicBlock::reverse_instr_iterator knows when it's at
the end (since r281168 and r281170), implement
MachineBasicBlock::reverse_iterator directly on top of an
ilist::reverse_iterator by adding an IsReverse template parameter to
MachineInstrBundleIterator.  This replaces another hard-to-reason-about
use of std::reverse_iterator on list iterators, matching the changes for
ilist::reverse_iterator from r280032 (see the "out of scope" section at
the end of that commit message). MachineBasicBlock::reverse_iterator
now has a handle to the current node and has obvious invalidation
semantics.

r280032 has a more detailed explanation of how list-style reverse
iterators (invalidated when the pointed-at node is deleted) are
different from vector-style reverse iterators like std::reverse_iterator
(invalidated on every operation). A great motivating example is this
commit's changes to lib/CodeGen/DeadMachineInstructionElim.cpp.

Note: If your out-of-tree backend deletes instructions while iterating
on a MachineBasicBlock::reverse_iterator or converts between
MachineBasicBlock::iterator and MachineBasicBlock::reverse_iterator,
you'll need to update your code in similar ways to r280032. The
following table might help:

                  [Old]              ==>             [New]
        delete &*RI, RE = end()                   delete &*RI++
        RI->erase(), RE = end()                   RI++->erase()
      reverse_iterator(I)                 std::prev(I).getReverse()
      reverse_iterator(I)                          ++I.getReverse()
    --reverse_iterator(I)                            I.getReverse()

Reid Kleckner a9f4cc9510 [codeview] Add new directives to record inlined call site line info
Summary:
Previously we were trying to represent this with the "contains" list of
the .cv_inline_linetable directive, which was not enough information.
Now we directly represent the chain of inlined call sites, so we know
what location to emit when we encounter a .cv_loc directive of an inner
inlined call site while emitting the line table of an outer function or
inlined call site. Fixes PR29146.

Also fixes PR29147, where we would crash when .cv_loc directives crossed
sections. Now we write down the section of the first .cv_loc directive,
and emit an error if any other .cv_loc directive for that function is in
a different section.

Also fixes issues with discontiguous inlined source locations, like in
this example:

  volatile int unlikely_cond = 0;
  extern void __declspec(noreturn) abort();
  __forceinline void f() {
    if (!unlikely_cond) abort();
  }
  int main() {
    unlikely_cond = 0;
    f();
    unlikely_cond = 0;
  }

Previously our tables gave bad location information for the 'abort'
call, and the debugger wouldn't snow the inlined stack frame for 'f'.
It is important to emit good line tables for this code pattern, because
it comes up whenever an asan bug occurs in an inlined function. The
__asan_report* stubs are generally placed after the normal function
epilogue, leading to discontiguous regions of inlined code.

Zachary Turner 5e3e4bb26b [CodeView] Decouple record deserialization from visitor dispatch.
Until now, our use case for the visitor has been to take a stream of bytes
representing a type stream, deserialize the records in sequence, and do
something with them, where "something" is determined by how the user
implements a particular set of callbacks on an abstract class.

For actually writing PDBs, however, we want to do the reverse. We have
some kind of description of the list of records in their in-memory format,
and we want to process each one. Perhaps by serializing them to a byte
stream, or perhaps by converting them from one description format (Yaml)
to another (in-memory representation).

This was difficult in the current model because deserialization and
invoking the callbacks were tightly coupled.

With this patch we change this so that TypeDeserializer is itself an
implementation of the particular set of callbacks. This decouples
deserialization from the iteration over a list of records and invocation
of the callbacks. TypeDeserializer is initialized with another
implementation of the callback interface, so that upon deserialization it
can pass the deserialized record through to the next set of callbacks. In
a sense this is like an implementation of the Decorator design pattern,
where the Deserializer is a decorator.

This will be useful for writing Pdbs from yaml, where we have a
description of the type records in Yaml format. In this case, the visitor
implementation would have each visitation callback method implemented in
such a way as to extract the proper set of fields from the Yaml, and it
could maintain state that builds up a list of these records. Finally at
the end we can pass this information through to another set of callbacks
which serializes them into a byte stream.

This increases the size of DISubprogram by 8 bytes, unfortunately. The
adjustment really is a signed 32-bit integer. If this size increase is
too much, we could probably win it back by splitting out a subclass with
info specific to virtual methods (virtuality, vindex, thisadjustment,

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 9cfc75c214 CodeGen: Use MachineInstr& in TargetInstrInfo, NFC
This is mostly a mechanical change to make TargetInstrInfo API take
MachineInstr& (instead of MachineInstr* or MachineBasicBlock::iterator)
when the argument is expected to be a valid MachineInstr. This is a
general API improvement.

Although it would be possible to do this one function at a time, that
would demand a quadratic amount of churn since many of these functions
call each other. Instead I've done everything as a block and just
updated what was necessary.

This is mostly mechanical fixes: adding and removing `*` and `&`
operators. The only non-mechanical change is to split
ARMBaseInstrInfo::getOperandLatencyImpl out from
ARMBaseInstrInfo::getOperandLatency. Previously, the latter took a
`MachineInstr*` which it updated to the instruction bundle leader; now,
the latter calls the former either with the same `MachineInstr&` or the
bundle leader.

As a side effect, this removes a bunch of MachineInstr* to
MachineBasicBlock::iterator implicit conversions, a necessary step
toward fixing PR26753.

Note: I updated WebAssembly, Lanai, and AVR (despite being
off-by-default) since it turned out to be easy. I couldn't run tests
for AVR since llc doesn't link with it turned on.

Reid Kleckner 643dd83661 [codeview] Defer emission of all referenced complete records
This is the motivating example:
  struct B { int b; };
  struct A { B *b; };
  int f(A *p) { return p->b->b; }

Clang emits complete types for both A and B because they are required to
be complete, but our CodeView emission would only emit forward
declarations of A and B. This was a consequence of the fact that the A*
type must reference the forward declaration of A, which doesn't
reference B at all.

We can't eagerly emit complete definitions of A and B when we request
the forward declaration's type index because of recursive types like
linked lists. If we did that, our stack usage could get out of hand, and
it would be possible to lower a type while attempting to lower a type,
and we would need to double check if our type is already present in the
TypeIndexMap after all recursive getTypeIndex calls.

Instead, defer complete type emission until after all type lowering has
completed. This ensures that all referenced complete types are emitted,
and that type lowering is not re-entrant.

Etienne Bergeron f6be62f2c8 [StackProtector] Fix computation of GSCookieOffset and EHCookieOffset with SEH4
Summary:
Fix the computation of the offsets present in the scopetable when using the
SEH (__except_handler4).

This patch added an intrinsic to track the position of the allocation on the
stack of the EHGuard. This position is needed when producing the ScopeTable.

```
    struct _EH4_SCOPETABLE {
        DWORD GSCookieOffset;
        DWORD GSCookieXOROffset;
        DWORD EHCookieOffset;
        DWORD EHCookieXOROffset;
        _EH4_SCOPETABLE_RECORD ScopeRecord[1];
    };
    struct _EH4_SCOPETABLE_RECORD {
        DWORD EnclosingLevel;
        long (*FilterFunc)();
            union {
            void (*HandlerAddress)();
            void (*FinallyFunc)();
        };
    };
```

The code to generate the EHCookie is added in `X86WinEHState.cpp`.
Which is adding these instructions when using SEH4.

```
Lfunc_begin0:
# BB#0:                                 # %entry
	pushl	%ebp
	calll	_may_throw_or_crash
LBB1_1:                                 # %cont
	addl	$28, %esp
	popl	%esi
	popl	%edi
	popl	%ebx
	popl	%ebp
	retl
```

And the corresponding offset is computed:
```
Luse_except_handler4_ssp$parent_frame_offset = -36
	.p2align	2
L__ehtable$use_except_handler4_ssp:
	.long	-2                      # GSCookieOffset
	.long	0                       # GSCookieXOROffset
	.long	-40                     # EHCookieOffset    <<----
	.long	0                       # EHCookieXOROffset
	.long	-2                      # ToState
	.long	_catchall_filt          # FilterFunction
	.long	LBB1_2                  # ExceptionHandler
```

Clang is not yet producing function using SEH4, but it's a work in progress.
This patch is a step toward having a valid implementation of SEH4.
Unfortunately, it is not yet fully working. The EH registration block is not
allocated at the right offset on the stack.

Sanjoy Das 0ebc9616b4 NFC; refactor getFrameIndexReferenceFromSP
Summary:
... into getFrameIndexReferencePreferSP. This change folds the
fail-then-retry logic into getFrameIndexReferencePreferSP.

There is a non-functional but behaviorial change in WinException --
earlier if `getFrameIndexReferenceFromSP` failed we'd trip an assert,
but now we'll silently use the (wrong) offset from the base pointer. I
could not write the assert I'd like to write ("FrameReg ==
StackRegister", like I've done in X86FrameLowering) since there is no
easy way to get to the stack register from WinException (happy to be
proven wrong here). One solution to this is to add a `bool
OnlyStackPointer` parameter to `getFrameIndexReferenceFromSP` that
asserts if it could not satisfy its promise of returning an offset from
a stack pointer, but that seems overkill.

Peter Collingbourne 96efdd6107 IR: Introduce local_unnamed_addr attribute.
If a local_unnamed_addr attribute is attached to a global, the address
is known to be insignificant within the module. It is distinct from the
existing unnamed_addr attribute in that it only describes a local property
of the module rather than a global property of the symbol.

This attribute is intended to be used by the code generator and LTO to allow
the linker to decide whether the global needs to be in the symbol table. It is
possible to exclude a global from the symbol table if three things are true:
- This attribute is present on every instance of the global (which means that
  the normal rule that the global must have a unique address can be broken without
  being observable by the program by performing comparisons against the global's
  address)
- The global has linkonce_odr linkage (which means that each linkage unit must have
  its own copy of the global if it requires one, and the copy in each linkage unit
  must be the same)
- It is a constant or a function (which means that the program cannot observe that
  the unique-address rule has been broken by writing to the global)

Although this attribute could in principle be computed from the module
contents, LTO clients (i.e. linkers) will normally need to be able to compute
this property as part of symbol resolution, and it would be inefficient to
materialize every module just to compute it.

Reid Kleckner de3d8b500f [DebugInfo] Add calling convention support for DWARF and CodeView
Summary:
Now DISubroutineType has a 'cc' field which should be a DW_CC_ enum. If
it is present and non-zero, the backend will emit it as a
DW_AT_calling_convention attribute. On the CodeView side, we translate
it to the appropriate enum for the LF_PROCEDURE record.

I added a new LLVM vendor specific enum to the list of DWARF calling
conventions. DWARF does not appear to attempt to standardize these, so I
assume it's OK to do this until we coordinate with GCC on how to emit
vectorcall convention functions.

        .byte   0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00

create .pdata with the .seh_* family of directives, and the assembler
internally needs to produce .pdata and .xdata sections corresponding to
the code section.

The association between .text sections and the assembler-created .xdata
and .pdata sections is maintained as an ID field of MCSectionCOFF. The
CFI-related sections are created with the given unique ID, so if more
code is added to the same text section, we can find and reuse the CFI

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith a59d3e5af8 DebugInfo: Remove MDString-based type references
Eliminate DITypeIdentifierMap and make DITypeRef a thin wrapper around
DIType*. It is no longer legal to refer to a DICompositeType by its
'identifier:', and DIBuilder no longer retains all types with an
'identifier:' automatically.

Aside from the bitcode upgrade, this is mainly removing logic to resolve
an MDString-based reference to an actualy DIType. The commits leading
up to this have made the implicit type map in DICompileUnit's
'retainedTypes:' field superfluous.

This does not remove DITypeRef, DIScopeRef, DINodeRef, and
DITypeRefArray, or stop using them in DI-related metadata. Although as
of this commit they aren't serving a useful purpose, there are patchces
under review to reuse them for CodeView support.

Adrian Prantl 75819aedf6 [PR27284] Reverse the ownership between DICompileUnit and DISubprogram.
Currently each Function points to a DISubprogram and DISubprogram has a
scope field. For member functions the scope is a DICompositeType. DIScopes
point to the DICompileUnit to facilitate type uniquing.

Distinct DISubprograms (with isDefinition: true) are not part of the type
hierarchy and cannot be uniqued. This change removes the subprograms
list from DICompileUnit and instead adds a pointer to the owning compile
unit to distinct DISubprograms. This would make it easy for ThinLTO to
strip unneeded DISubprograms and their transitively referenced debug info.

Motivation
----------

Materializing DISubprograms is currently the most expensive operation when
doing a ThinLTO build of clang.

We want the DISubprogram to be stored in a separate Bitcode block (or the
same block as the function body) so we can avoid having to expensively
deserialize all DISubprograms together with the global metadata. If a
function has been inlined into another subprogram we need to store a
reference the block containing the inlined subprogram.

Attached to https://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=27284 is a python script

Adrian Prantl 3891e9e859 Drop debug info for DISubprograms that are not referenced by anything
This patch drops the debug info for all DISubprograms that are
(a) not attached to an llvm::Function and
(b) not indirectly reachable via inline scopes from any surviving Function and
(c) not reachable from a type (i.e.: member functions).

Background: I'm currently working on a patch to reverse the pointers
between DICompileUnit and DISubprogram (for more info check Duncan's RFC
on lazy-loading of debug info metadata
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2016-March/097419.html).
The idea is to remove the list of subprograms from DICompileUnit and
instead point to the owning compile unit from each DISubprogram.

Adrian Prantl 3e9c88753b DwarfDebug: Support floating point constants in location lists.
This patch closes a gap in the DWARF backend that caused LLVM to drop
debug info for floating point variables that were constant for part of
their scope. Floating point constants are emitted as one or more
DW_OP_constu joined via DW_OP_piece.

This fixes a regression caught by the LLDB testsuite that I introduced
in r262247 when we stopped blindly expanding the range of singular
DBG_VALUEs to span the entire scope and started to emit location lists
with accurate ranges instead.

Also deletes a now-impossible testcase (debug-loc-empty-entries).

David Blaikie 0b214e4a2a [debuginfo] Include dwo_name in the split unit to improve dwp diagnostics
When multiple DWP files are merged together and duplicate DWO IDs are
found it's currently difficult to give an actionable error message - the
DW_AT_name of the CU could be provided, but might be identical (if the
same source file is built into two different configurations), which
doesn't help the user identify the problem.

When no intermediate DWP files are generated, the path to the two DWO
files could be provided - but is lost once the DWOs are merged into a
DWP.

So, include the name of the DWO (dwo_name) in the split file so that
collissions involving a source CU from a DWP can be better diagnosed.

Lang Hames 1b640e05ba [MachO] Add MachO alt-entry directive support.
This patch adds support for the MachO .alt_entry assembly directive, and uses
it for global aliases with non-zero GEP offsets. The alt_entry flag indicates
that a symbol should be layed out immediately after the preceding symbol.
Conceptually it introduces an alternate entry point for a function or data
structure. E.g.:

safe_foo:
  // check preconditions for foo
.alt_entry fast_foo
fast_foo:
  // body of foo, can assume preconditions.

The .alt_entry flag is also implicitly set on assembly aliases of the form:

a = b + C

where C is a non-zero constant, since these have the same effect as an
alt_entry symbol: they introduce a label that cannot be moved relative to the
preceding one. Setting the alt_entry flag on aliases of this form fixes

Fundamentally, the length of a variable or function name is bound by the

We would naively attempt to emit the name, causing us to assert because

While I have tested this locally, I've decided to not commit it due to

The CatchObjOffset is relative to the end of the EH registration node

This means that a catch object allocated immediately before the

To handle this, allocate the registration node prior to any other frame

Reid Kleckner c62e379d22 [CodeView] Use assembler directives for line tables
Adds a new family of .cv_* directives to LLVM's variant of GAS syntax:

- .cv_file: Similar to DWARF .file directives

- .cv_loc: Similar to the DWARF .loc directive, but starts with a
  function id. CodeView line tables are emitted by function instead of
  by compilation unit, so we needed an extra field to communicate this.
  Rather than overloading the .loc direction further, we decided it was
  better to have our own directive.

- .cv_stringtable: Emits the codeview string table at the current
  position. Currently this just contains the filenames as
  null-terminated strings.

- .cv_filechecksums: Emits the file checksum table for all files used
  with .cv_file so far. There is currently no support for emitting
  actual checksums, just filenames.

This moves the line table emission code down into the assembler. This
is in preparation for implementing the inlined call site line table
format. The inline line table format encoding algorithm requires knowing
the absolute code offsets, so it must run after the assembler has laid
out the code.

Joseph Tremoulet 52f729a613 [WinEH] Update CoreCLR EH state numbering
Summary:
Fix the CLR state numbering to generate correct tables, and update the lit
test to verify them.

The CLR numbering assigns one state number to each catchpad and
cleanuppad.

It also computes two tree-like relations over states:
 1) Each state has a "HandlerParentState", which is the state of the next
    outer handler enclosing this state's handler (same as nearest ancestor
    per the ParentPad linkage on EH pads, but skipping over catchswitches).
 2) Each state has a "TryParentState", which:
    a) for a catchpad that's not the last handler on its catchswitch, is
       the state of the next catchpad on that catchswitch.
    b) for all other pads, is the state of the pad whose try region is the
       next outer try region enclosing this state's try region. The "try
       regions are not present as such in the IR, but will be inferred
       based on the placement of invokes and pads which reach each other
       by exceptional exits.

Catchswitches do not get their own states, but each gets mapped to the
state of its first catchpad.

Table generation requires each state's "unwind dest" state to have a lower
state number than the given state.

Since HandlerParentState can be computed as a function of a pad's
ParentPad, and TryParentState can be computed as a function of its unwind
dest and the TryParentStates of its children, the CLR state numbering
algorithm first computes HandlerParentState in a top-down pass, then
computes TryParentState in a bottom-up pass.

Also reword some comments/names in the CLR EH table generation to make the
distinction between the different kinds of "parent" clear.

Keno Fischer 00cbf9a69a Clean up the processing of dbg.value in various places
Summary:
First up is instcombine, where in the dbg.declare -> dbg.value conversion,
the llvm.dbg.value needs to be called on the actual loaded value, rather
than the address (since the whole point of this transformation is to be
able to get rid of the alloca). Further, now that that's cleaned up, we
can remove a hack in the backend, that would add an implicit OP_deref if
the argument to dbg.value was an alloca. This stems from before the
existence of DIExpression and is no longer necessary since the deref can
be expressed explicitly.

Now, in order to make sure that the tests pass with this change, we need to
correct the printing of DEBUG_VALUE comments to take into account the
expression, which wasn't taken into account before.

Unfortunately, for both these changes, there were a number of incorrect
test cases (mostly the wrong number of DW_OP_derefs, but also a couple
where the test itself was broken more badly). aprantl and I have gone
through and adjusted these test case in order to make them pass with
these fixes and in some cases to make sure they're actually testing
what they are meant to test.

David Majnemer 8a1c45d6e8 [IR] Reformulate LLVM's EH funclet IR
While we have successfully implemented a funclet-oriented EH scheme on
top of LLVM IR, our scheme has some notable deficiencies:
- catchendpad and cleanupendpad are necessary in the current design
  but they are difficult to explain to others, even to seasoned LLVM
  experts.
- catchendpad and cleanupendpad are optimization barriers. They cannot
  be split and force all potentially throwing call-sites to be invokes.
  This has a noticable effect on the quality of our code generation.
- catchpad, while similar in some aspects to invoke, is fairly awkward.
  It is unsplittable, starts a funclet, and has control flow to other
  funclets.
- The nesting relationship between funclets is currently a property of
  control flow edges. Because of this, we are forced to carefully
  analyze the flow graph to see if there might potentially exist illegal
  nesting among funclets. While we have logic to clone funclets when
  they are illegally nested, it would be nicer if we had a
  representation which forbade them upfront.

Let's clean this up a bit by doing the following:
- Instead, make catchpad more like cleanuppad and landingpad: no control
  flow, just a bunch of simple operands; catchpad would be splittable.
- Introduce catchswitch, a control flow instruction designed to model
  the constraints of funclet oriented EH.
- Make funclet scoping explicit by having funclet instructions consume
  the token produced by the funclet which contains them.
- Remove catchendpad and cleanupendpad. Their presence can be inferred
  implicitly using coloring information.

N.B. The state numbering code for the CLR has been updated but the
veracity of it's output cannot be spoken for. An expert should take a
look to make sure the results are reasonable.

It looks like llvm implemented this because gcc was doing it. It looks
like gcc implemented this in the hope that it would put all the

There are two problem with this:
* It doesn't work. Both bfd and gold will map .data.rel to .data and

Reid Kleckner c20276d0b2 [WinEH] Move WinEHFuncInfo from MachineModuleInfo to MachineFunction
Summary:
Now that there is a one-to-one mapping from MachineFunction to
WinEHFuncInfo, we don't need to use a DenseMap to select the right
WinEHFuncInfo for the current funclet.

The main challenge here is that X86WinEHStatePass is an IR pass that
doesn't have access to the MachineFunction. I gave it its own
WinEHFuncInfo object that it uses to calculate state numbers, which it
then throws away. As long as nobody creates or removes EH pads between
this pass and SDAG construction, we will get the same state numbers.

The other thing X86WinEHStatePass does is to mark the EH registration
node. Instead of communicating which alloca was the registration through
WinEHFuncInfo, I added the llvm.x86.seh.ehregnode intrinsic. This
intrinsic generates no code and simply marks the alloca in use.

Rafael Espindola 65e4902156 Drop prelink support.
The way prelink used to work was

* The compiler decides if a given section only has relocations that
are know to point to the same DSO. If so, it names it
.data.rel.ro.local<something>.
* The static linker puts all of these together.
* The prelinker program assigns addresses to each library and resolves
the local relocations.

There are many problems with this:
* It is incompatible with address space randomization.
* The information passed by the compiler is redundant. The linker
knows if a given relocation is in the same DSO or not. If could sort
by that if so desired.
* There are newer ways of speeding up DSO (gnu hash for example).
* Even if we want to implement this again in the compiler, the previous
  implementation is pretty broken. It talks about relocations that are
  "resolved by the static linker". If they are resolved, there are none
  left for the prelinker. What one needs to track is if an expression
  will require only dynamic relocations that point to the same DSO.

At this point it looks like the prelinker is an historical curiosity.
For example, fedora has retired it because it failed to build for two
releases

Previously, subprograms contained a metadata reference to the function they
described. Because most clients need to get or set a subprogram for a given

For example, many passes needed to call the function llvm::makeSubprogramMap()

fix up function references in a way that caused quadratic complexity in the IR

This change reverses the direction of the edge by storing the subprogram as

Joseph Tremoulet 3d0fbf1d74 [CodeGen] Mark setjmp/catchret MBBs address-taken
Summary:
This ensures that BranchFolding (and similar) won't remove these blocks.

Also allow AsmPrinter::EmitBasicBlockStart to process MBBs which are
address-taken but do not have BBs that are address-taken, since otherwise
its call to getAddrLabelSymbolTableToEmit would fail an assertion on such
blocks. I audited the other callers of getAddrLabelSymbolTableToEmit
(and getAddrLabelSymbol); they all have BBs known to be address-taken
except for the call through getAddrLabelSymbol from
WinException::create32bitRef; that call is actually now unreachable, so
I've removed it and updated the signature of create32bitRef.

This fixes PR25168.

Reid Kleckner df1295173f [WinEH] Emit prologues and epilogues for funclets
Summary:
32-bit funclets have short prologues that allocate enough stack for the
largest call in the whole function. The runtime saves CSRs for the
funclet. It doesn't restore CSRs after we finally transfer control back
to the parent funciton via a CATCHRET, but that's a separate issue.
32-bit funclets also have to adjust the incoming EBP value, which is
what llvm.x86.seh.recoverframe does in the old model.

64-bit funclets need to spill CSRs as normal. For simplicity, this just
spills the same set of CSRs as the parent function, rather than trying
to compute different CSR sets for the parent function and each funclet.
64-bit funclets also allocate enough stack space for the largest
outgoing call frame, like 32-bit.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 0660bcda53 AsmPrinter: Allow null subroutine type
Currently the DWARF backend requires that subprograms have a type, and
the type is ignored if it has an empty type array. The long term
direction here -- see PR23079 -- is instead to skip the type entirely if
there's no valid type.

It turns out we have cases in tree of missing types on subprograms, but
since they're not referenced by compile units, the backend never crashes
on them. One option would be to add a Verifier check that subprograms
have types, and fix the bitrot. However, this is a fair bit of churn
(20-30 testcases) that would be reversed anyway by PR23079.

I found this inconsistency because of a WIP patch and upgrade script for
PR23367 that started crashing on test/DebugInfo/2010-10-01-crash.ll.
This commit updates the testcase to reference the subprogram from the
compile unit, and fixes the resulting crash (in line with the direction
of PR23079). This also updates `DIBuilder` to stop assuming a non-null
pointer for the subroutine types.

Pete Cooper f3159f3c12 Reapply "Add reverse(ContainerTy) range adapter."
This reverts commit r243567, which ultimately reapplies r243563.

The fix here was to use std::enable_if for overload resolution. Thanks to David
Blaikie for lots of help on this, and for the extra tests!

Original commit message follows:

For cases where we needed a foreach loop in reverse over a container,
we had to do something like

 for (const GlobalValue *GV : make_range(TypeInfos.rbegin(),
                                         TypeInfos.rend())) {

This provides a convenience method which shortens this to

 for (const GlobalValue *GV : reverse(TypeInfos)) {

There are 2 versions of this, with a preference to the rbegin() version.

The first uses rbegin() and rend() to construct an iterator_range.

The second constructs an iterator_range from the begin() and end() methods
wrapped in std::reverse_iterator's.

This provides a convenience method which shortens this to

  for (const GlobalValue *GV : reverse(TypeInfos)) {

There are 2 versions of this, with a preference to the rbegin() version.

The first uses rbegin() and rend() to construct an iterator_range.

The second constructs an iterator_range from the begin() and end() methods
wrapped in std::reverse_iterator's.

Summary:
Initially, these intrinsics seemed like part of a family of "frame"
related intrinsics, but now I think that's more confusing than helpful.
Initially, the LangRef specified that this would create a new kind of
allocation that would be allocated at a fixed offset from the frame
pointer (EBP/RBP). We ended up dropping that design, and leaving the
stack frame layout alone.

These intrinsics are really about sharing local stack allocations, not
frame pointers. I intend to go further and add an `llvm.localaddress()`
intrinsic that returns whatever register (EBP, ESI, ESP, RBX) is being
used to address locals, which should not be confused with the frame
pointer.

Naming suggestions at this point are welcome, I'm happy to re-run sed.

Reid Kleckner 399a2fe400 [SEH] Add new intrinsics for recovering and restoring parent frames
The incoming EBP value established by the runtime is actually a pointer
to the end of the EH registration object, and not the true parent
function frame pointer. Clang doesn't need llvm.x86.seh.exceptioninfo
anymore because we know that the exception info pointer is at a fixed
offset from this incoming EBP.

The llvm.x86.seh.recoverfp intrinsic takes an EBP value provided by the
EH runtime and returns a pointer that is usable with llvm.framerecover.

The llvm.x86.seh.restoreframe intrinsic is inserted by the 32-bit
specific preparation pass in blocks targetted by the EH runtime. It
re-establishes any physical registers used by the parent function to
address the stack, such as the frame, base, and stack pointers.

Neither of these intrinsics correctly handle stack realignment prologues
yet, but it's possible to add that later.

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith e6cc531b1a AsmPrinter: Rewrite initialization of DbgVariable, NFC
There are three types of `DbgVariable`:
  - alloca variables, created based on the MMI table,
  - register variables, created based on DBG_VALUE instructions, and
  - optimized-out variables.

This commit reconfigures `DbgVariable` to make it easier to tell which
kind we have, and make initialization a little clearer.

For MMI/alloca variables, `FrameIndex.size()` must always equal
`Expr.size()`, and there shouldn't be an `MInsn`. For register
variables (with a `MInsn`), `FrameIndex` must be empty, and `Expr`
should have 0 or 1 element depending on whether it has a complex
expression (registers with multiple locations use `DebugLocListIndex`).
Optimized-out variables shouldn't have any of these fields.

Moreover, this separates DBG_VALUE initialization until after the
variable is created, simplifying logic in a future commit that changes
`collectVariableInfo()` to stop creating empty .debug_loc entries/lists.

ELF uses a relocation to the referenced point (except for .dwo) and

* It doesn't produce an offset on ELF.

are emitted first, and fix an obvious state assignment bug.

Reid Kleckner a9d6253572 [WinEH] Create an llvm.x86.seh.exceptioninfo intrinsic
This intrinsic is like framerecover plus a load. It recovers the EH
registration stack allocation from the parent frame and loads the
exception information field out of it, giving back a pointer to an
EXCEPTION_POINTERS struct. It's designed for clang to use in SEH filter
expressions instead of accessing the EXCEPTION_POINTERS parameter that
is available on x64.

This required a minor change to MC to allow defining a label variable to
another absolute framerecover label variable.

Stop storing a `DIEAbbrev` in `DIE`, since the data fits neatly inside

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith e7e1d0c706 Reapply "AsmPrinter: Change DIEValue to be stored by value"
This reverts commit r238350, effectively reapplying r238349 after fixing
(all?) the problems, all somehow related to how I was using
`AlignedArrayCharUnion<>` inside `DIEValue`:

  - MSVC can only handle `sizeof()` on types, not values. Change the
    assert.
  - GCC doesn't know the `is_trivially_copyable` type trait. Instead of
    asserting it, add destructors.
  - Call placement new even when constructing POD (i.e., the pointers).
  - Instead of copying the char buffer, copy the casted classes.

I've left in a couple of `static_assert`s that I think both MSVC and GCC
know how to handle. If the bots disagree with me, I'll remove them.

  - Check that the constructed type is either standard layout or a
    pointer. This protects against a programming error: we really want
    the "small" `DIEValue`s to be small and simple, so don't
    accidentally change them not to be.
  - Similarly, check that the size of the buffer is no bigger than a
    `uint64_t` or a pointer. (I thought checking against
    `sizeof(uint64_t)` would be good enough, but Chandler suggested that
    pointers might sometimes be bigger than that in the context of
    sanitizers.)

I've also committed r238359 in the meantime, which introduces a
DIEValue.def to simplify dispatching between the various types (thanks
to a review comment by David Blaikie). Without that, this commit would
be almost unintelligible.

Here's the original commit message:
--
Change `DIEValue` to be stored/passed/etc. by value, instead of
reference. It's now a discriminated union, with a `Val` field storing
the actual type. The classes that used to inherit from `DIEValue` no
longer do. There are two categories of these:

  - Small values fit in a single pointer and are stored by value.
  - Large values require auxiliary storage, and are stored by reference.

The only non-mechanical change is to tools/dsymutil/DwarfLinker.cpp. It
was relying on `DIEInteger`s being passed around by reference, so I
replaced that assumption with a `PatchLocation` type that stores a safe
reference to where the `DIEInteger` lives instead.

This commit causes a temporary regression in memory usage, since I've
left merging `DIEAbbrevData` into `DIEValue` for a follow-up commit.  I
measured an increase from 845 MB to 879 MB, around 3.9%. The follow-up
drops it lower than the starting point, and I've only recently brought
the memory this low anyway, so I'm committing these changes separately
to keep them incremental. (I also considered swapping the commits, but
the other one first would cause a lot more code churn.)

(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)

Duncan P. N. Exon Smith 1e0d94e7bb AsmPrinter: Avoid EmitLabelDifference() in DwarfAccelTable
Mint a new function, `AsmPrinter::emitDwarfStringOffset()`, which takes
a `DwarfStringPoolEntryRef`. When DWARF is relocatable across sections,
this defers to `emitSectionOffset()` and emits the `MCSymbol`;
otherwise, just emit the offset directly, without using any intermediate
symbols.

`EmitLabelDifference()` is already optimized to emit absolute label
differences cheaply when possible, so there aren't any major memory
savings here (853 MB down to 851 MB, or 0.2%). However, it prepares for
making the `MCSymbol`s in the `DwarfStringPool` optional.
