Summary:
This patch improves Inliner to provide causes/reasons for negative inline decisions.
1. It adds one new message field to InlineCost to report causes for Always and Never instances. All Never and Always instantiations must provide a simple message.
2. Several functions that used to return the inlining results as boolean are changed to return InlineResult which carries the cause for negative decision.
3. Changed remark priniting and debug output messages to provide the additional messages and related inline cost.
4. Adjusted tests for changed printing.

Previously, in the NewPM pipeline, TailCallElim recalculates the DomTree when it modifies any instruction in the Function.
For example,
```
CallInst *CI = dyn_cast<CallInst>(&I);
...
CI->setTailCall();
Modified = true;
...
if (!Modified || ...)
return PreservedAnalyses::all();
```
After applying this patch, the DomTree only recalculates if needed (plus an extra insertEdge() + an extra deleteEdge() call).
When optimizing SQLite with `-passes="default<O3>"` pipeline of the newPM, the number of DomTree recalculation decreases by 6.2%, the number of nodes visited by DFS decreases by 2.9%. The time used by DomTree will decrease approximately 1%~2.5% after applying the patch.
Statistics:
```
23010 dom-tree-stats - Number of DomTree recalculations
489264 dom-tree-stats - Number of nodes visited by DFS -- DomTree
After the patch:
LowerDbgDeclare inserts a dbg.value before each use of an address
described by a dbg.declare. When inserting a dbg.value before a CallInst
use, however, it fails to append DW_OP_deref to the DIExpression.
The DW_OP_deref is needed to reflect the fact that a dbg.value describes
a source variable directly (as opposed to a dbg.declare, which relies on
pointer indirection).
This patch adds in the DW_OP_deref where needed. This results in the
correct values being shown during a debug session for a program compiled
with ASan and optimizations (see https://reviews.llvm.org/D49520). Note
that ConvertDebugDeclareToDebugValue is already correct -- no changes
there were needed.
One complication is that SelectionDAG is unable to distinguish between
direct and indirect frame-index (FRAMEIX) SDDbgValues. This patch also
fixes this long-standing issue in order to not regress integration tests
relying on the incorrect assumption that all frame-index SDDbgValues are
indirect. This is a necessary fix: the newly-added DW_OP_derefs cannot
be lowered properly otherwise. Basically the fix prevents a direct
SDDbgValue with DIExpression(DW_OP_deref) from being dereferenced twice
by a debugger. There were a handful of tests relying on this incorrect
"FRAMEIX => indirect" assumption which actually had incorrect
DW_AT_locations: these are all fixed up in this patch.
Testing:
- check-llvm, and an end-to-end test using lldb to debug an optimized
program.
- Existing unit tests for DIExpression::appendToStack fully cover the
new DIExpression::append utility.
- check-debuginfo (the debug info integration tests)
replacing one value with another.
This improves upon the existing insertReplacementDbgValues API by:
- Updating debug intrinsics in-place, while preventing use-before-def of
- Falling back to salvageDebugInfo when a replacement can't be made.
- Moving the responsibiliy for rewriting llvm.dbg.* DIExpressions into
common utility code.
Along with the API change, this teaches replaceAllDbgUsesWith how to
create DIExpressions for three basic integer and pointer conversions:
- The no-op conversion. Applies when the values have the same width, or
- Truncation. Applies when the new value is wider than the old one.
- Zero/sign extension. Applies when the new value is narrower than the
call void @llvm.dbg.declare(metadata i32* %vla, metadata !1, metadata !DIExpression())
Instcombine will turn it into
%vla1 = alloca [2 x i32]
%vla1.sub = getelementptr inbounds [2 x i32], [2 x i32]* %vla, i64 0, i64 0
call void @llvm.dbg.declare(metadata [2 x i32]* %vla1.sub, metadata !19, metadata !DIExpression())
If the GEP can be eliminated, then the dbg.declare will be salvaged
and we should get
%vla1 = alloca [2 x i32]
call void @llvm.dbg.declare(metadata [2 x i32]* %vla1, metadata !19, metadata !DIExpression())
The problem was that salvageDebugInfo did not recognize dbg.declare
as being indirect (%vla1 points to the value, it does not hold the
value), so we incorrectly got
call void @llvm.dbg.declare(metadata [2 x i32]* %vla1, metadata !19, metadata !DIExpression(DW_OP_stack_value))
I also made sure that llvm::salvageDebugInfo and
DIExpression::prependOpcodes do not add DW_OP_stack_value to
the DIExpression in case no new operands are added to the
DIExpression. That way we avoid to, unneccessarily, turn a
register location expression into an implicit location expression
in some situations (see test11 in test/Transforms/LICM/sinking.ll).
This is a simple implementation of the unroll-and-jam classical loop
optimisation.
The basic idea is that we take an outer loop of the form:
for i..
ForeBlocks(i)
for j..
SubLoopBlocks(i, j)
AftBlocks(i)
Instead of doing normal inner or outer unrolling, we unroll as follows:
for i... i+=2
ForeBlocks(i)
ForeBlocks(i+1)
for j..
SubLoopBlocks(i, j)
SubLoopBlocks(i+1, j)
AftBlocks(i)
AftBlocks(i+1)
Remainder Loop
So we have unrolled the outer loop, then jammed the two inner loops into
one. This can lead to a simpler inner loop if memory accesses can be shared
between the now jammed loops.
To do this we have to prove that this is all safe, both for the memory
accesses (using dependence analysis) and that ForeBlocks(i+1) can move before
AftBlocks(i) and SubLoopBlocks(i, j).
Summary:
This is a follow-up to r334830 and r335031.
In the valueCoversEntireFragment check we now also handle
the situation when there is a variable length array (VLA)
involved, and the length of the array has been reduced to
a constant.
The ConvertDebugDeclareToDebugValue functions that are related
to PHI nodes and load instructions now avoid inserting dbg.value
intrinsics when the value does not, for certain, cover the
variable/fragment that should be described.
In r334830 we assumed that the value always covered the entire
var/fragment and we had assertions in the code to show that
assumption. However, those asserts failed when compiling code
with VLAs, so we removed the asserts in r335031. Now when we
know that the valueCoversEntireFragment check can fail also for
PHI/Load instructions we avoid to insert the faulty dbg.value
intrinsic in such situations. Compared to the Store instruction
scenario we simply drop the dbg.value here (as the variable does
not change its value due to PHI/Load, so an earlier dbg.value
describing the variable should still be valid).
Using OrderedInstructions::dominates as comparator for instructions in
BBs without dominance relation can cause a non-deterministic order
between such instructions. That in turn can cause us to materialize
copies in a non-deterministic order. While this does not effect
correctness, it causes some minor non-determinism in the final generated
code, because values have slightly different labels.
Without this patch, running -print-predicateinfo on a reasonably large
This patch uses the dominator trees DFSInNum to order instruction from
The purpose of this utility is to make it easier for optimizations to
insert replacement dbg.values for instructions they are deleting. This
is useful in situations where salvageDebugInfo is inapplicable, say,
because the new dbg.value cannot refer to an operand of the dying value.
The utility is called insertReplacementDbgValues.
It assumes that the instruction 'From' is going to be deleted, and
inserts replacement dbg.values for each debug user of 'From'. The
newly-inserted dbg.values refer to 'To' instead of 'From'. Each
replacement dbg.value has the same location and variable as the debug
user it replaces, has a DIExpression determined by the result of
'RewriteExpr' applied to an old debug user of 'From', and is placed
before 'InsertBefore'.
Summary:
Do not convert a DbgDeclare to DbgValue if the store
instruction only refer to a fragment of the variable
described by the DbgDeclare.
Problem was seen when for example having an alloca for an
array or struct, and there were stores to individual elements.
In the past we inserted a DbgValue intrinsics for each store,
just as if the store wrote the whole variable.
When handling store instructions we insert a DbgValue that
indicates that the variable is "undefined", as we do not know
which part of the variable that is updated by the store.
When ConvertDebugDeclareToDebugValue is used with a load/phi
instruction we assert that the referenced value is large enough
to cover the whole variable. Afaict this should be true for all
scenarios where those methods are used on trunk. If the assert
blows in the future I guess we could simply skip to insert a
dbg.value instruction.
In the future I think we should examine which part of the variable
that is accessed, and add a DbgValue instrinsic with an appropriate
DW_OP_LLVM_fragment expression.
be both simpler and substantially more efficient.
Rather than use a hand-rolled iteration technique that isn't quite the
same as RPO, use the pre-built RPO loop body traversal utility.
Once visiting the loop body in RPO, we can assert that we visit defs
before uses reliably. When this is the case, the only need to iterate is
when simplifying a def that is used by a PHI node along a back-edge.
With this patch, the first pass over the loop body is just a complete
simplification of every instruction across the loop body. When we
encounter a use of a simplified instruction that stems from a PHI node
in the loop body that has already been visited (due to some cyclic CFG,
potentially the loop itself, or a nested loop, or unstructured control
flow), we recall that specific PHI node for the second iteration.
Nothing else needs to be preserved from iteration to iteration.
On the second and later iterations, only instructions known to have
simplified inputs are considered, each time starting from a set of PHIs
that had simplified inputs along the backedges.
Dead instructions are collected along the way, but deleted in a batch at
the end of each iteration making the iterations themselves substantially
simpler. This uses a new batch API for recursively deleting dead
instructions.
This alsa changes the routine to visit subloops. Because simplification
is fundamentally transitive, we may need to visit the entire loop body,
including subloops, to handle knock-on simplification.
I've added a basic test file that helps demonstrate that all of these
changes work. It includes both straight-forward loops with
simplifications as well as interesting PHI-structures, CFG-structures,
and a nested loop case.
This is a simple implementation of the unroll-and-jam classical loop
optimisation.
The basic idea is that we take an outer loop of the form:
for i..
ForeBlocks(i)
for j..
SubLoopBlocks(i, j)
AftBlocks(i)
Instead of doing normal inner or outer unrolling, we unroll as follows:
for i... i+=2
ForeBlocks(i)
ForeBlocks(i+1)
for j..
SubLoopBlocks(i, j)
SubLoopBlocks(i+1, j)
AftBlocks(i)
AftBlocks(i+1)
Remainder
So we have unrolled the outer loop, then jammed the two inner loops into
one. This can lead to a simpler inner loop if memory accesses can be shared
between the now-jammed loops.
To do this we have to prove that this is all safe, both for the memory
accesses (using dependence analysis) and that ForeBlocks(i+1) can move before
AftBlocks(i) and SubLoopBlocks(i, j).
In LoopVersioning::addPHINodes we need to iterate over all
users for a value "Inst", and if the user is outside of the
VersionedLoop we should replace the use of "Inst" by using
the value "PN" instead.
Replacing the use of "Inst" for a user of "Inst" also means
that Inst->users() is modified. So it is not safe to do the
replace while iterating over Inst->users() as we used to do.
This patch splits the task into two steps. First we iterate
over Inst->users() to find all users that should be updated.
Those users are saved into a local data structure on the stack.
And then, in the second step, we do the actual updates. This
time iterating over the local data structure.
IR and to allow backend to generate debug information correctly.
We create a new kind of metadata for labels, DILabel. The format
of DILabel is
!DILabel(scope: !1, name: "foo", file: !2, line: 3)
We hope to keep debug information as much as possible even the
metadata to avoid the metadata is eliminated with basic block.
The intrinsic will keep existing if we keep it from optimized out.
The format of the intrinsic is
llvm.dbg.label(metadata !1)
It has only one argument, that is the DILabel metadata. The
intrinsic will follow the label immediately. Backend could get the
label metadata through the intrinsic's parameter.
We also create DIBuilder API for labels to be used by Frontend.
Frontend could use createLabel() to allocate DILabel objects, and use
insertLabel() to insert llvm.dbg.label intrinsic in LLVM IR.
As demonstrated by the regression tests added in this patch, the
following cases are valid cases:
1. A Function with no DISubprogram attached, but various debug info
related to its instructions, coming, for instance, from an inlined
function, also defined somewhere else in the same module;
2. ... or coming exclusively from the functions inlined and eliminated
from the module entirely.
The ValueMap shared between CloneFunctionInto calls within CloneModule
needs to contain identity mappings for all of the DISubprogram's to
prevent them from being duplicated by MapMetadata / RemapInstruction
calls, this is achieved via DebugInfoFinder collecting all the
DISubprogram's. However, CloneFunctionInto was missing calls into
DebugInfoFinder for functions w/o DISubprogram's attached, but still
referring DISubprogram's from within (case 1). This patch fixes that.
The fix above, however, exposes another issue: if a module contains a
DISubprogram referenced only indirectly from other debug info
metadata, but not attached to any Function defined within the module
(case 2), cloning such a module causes a DICompileUnit duplication: it
will be moved in indirecty via a DISubprogram by DebugInfoFinder first
(because of the first bug fix described above), without being
self-mapped within the shared ValueMap, and then will be copied during
named metadata cloning. So this patch makes sure DebugInfoFinder
visits DICompileUnit's referenced from DISubprogram's as it goes w/o
re-processing llvm.dbg.cu list over and over again for every function
cloned, and makes sure that CloneFunctionInto self-maps
DICompileUnit's referenced from the entire function, not just its own
DISubprogram attached that may also be missing.
The most convenient way of tesing CloneModule I found is to rely on
CloneModule call from `opt -run-twice`, instead of writing tedious
unit tests. That feature has a couple of properties that makes it hard
to use for this purpose though:
1. CloneModule doesn't copy source filename, making `opt -run-twice`
report it as a difference.
2. `opt -run-twice` does the second run on the original module, not
its clone, making the result of cloning completely invisible in opt's
actual output with and without `-run-twice` both, which directly
contradicts `opt -run-twice`s own error message.
This patch fixes this as well.
The existing LoopRotation.cpp is implemented as one of loop passes instead of
being a utility. The user cannot easily perform the loop rotation selectively
(or on demand) under different optimization level. For example, the loop
rotation is needed as part of the logic to convert a loop into a loop with
bottom test for a transformation. If the loop rotation is simply added as a
loop pass before the transformation, the pass is skipped if it is compiled at
–O0 or if it is explicitly disabled by the user, causing the compiler to
generate incorrect code. Furthermore, as a loop pass it will rotate all loops
instead of just the relevant loops.
We provide a utility interface for the loop rotation so that the loop rotation
can be called on demand. The changeset is as follows:
- Create a new file lib/Transforms/Utils/LoopRotationUtils.cpp and move the main
implementation of class LoopRotate into this file.
- Create a new file llvm/include/Transform/Utils/LoopRotationUtils.h with the
interface LoopRotation(...).
- Original LoopRotation.cpp is changed to use the utility function LoopRotation
We check `canPeel` twice: when evaluating the number of iterations to be peeled
and within the method `peelLoop` that performs peeling. This method is only
executed if the calculated peel count is positive. Thus, the check in `peelLoop` can
never fail. This patch replaces this check with an assert.
Current logic of loop SCEV invalidation in Loop Unroller implicitly relies on
fact that exit count of outer loops cannot rely on exiting blocks of
inner loops, which is true in current implementation of backedge taken count
calculation but is wrong in general. As result, when we only forget the loop that
we have just unrolled, we may still have cached data for its outer loops (in particular,
exit counts) which keeps references on blocks of inner loop that could have been
changed or even deleted.
The attached test demonstrates a situaton when after unrolling of innermost loop
the outermost loop contains a dangling pointer on non-existant block. The problem
shows up when we apply patch https://reviews.llvm.org/D44677 that makes SCEV
smarter about exit count calculation. I am not sure if the bug exists without this patch,
it appears that now it is accidentally correct just because in practice exact backedge
taken count for outer loops with complex control flow inside is never calculated.
But when SCEV learns to do so, this problem shows up.
This patch replaces existing logic of SCEV loop invalidation with a correct one, which
happens to be invalidation of outermost loop (which also leads to invalidation of all
loops inside of it). It is the only way to ensure that no outer loop keeps dangling pointers
on removed blocks, or just outdated information that has changed after unrolling.
X86 Supports Indirect Branch Tracking (IBT) as part of Control-Flow Enforcement Technology (CET).
IBT instruments ENDBR instructions used to specify valid targets of indirect call / jmp.
The `nocf_check` attribute has two roles in the context of X86 IBT technology:
1. Appertains to a function - do not add ENDBR instruction at the beginning of the function.
2. Appertains to a function pointer - do not track the target function of this pointer by adding nocf_check prefix to the indirect-call instruction.
This patch implements `nocf_check` context for Indirect Branch Tracking.
It also auto generates `nocf_check` prefixes before indirect branchs to jump tables that are guarded by range checks.
It is common to have conditional exits within a loop which are known not to be taken on some iterations, but not necessarily all. This patches extends our reasoning around guaranteed to execute (used when establishing whether it's safe to dereference a location from the preheader) to handle the case where an exit is known not to be taken on the first iteration and the instruction of interest *is* known to be taken on the first iteration.
This case comes up in two major ways:
* If we have a range check which we've been unable to eliminate, we frequently know that it doesn't fail on the first iteration.
* Pass ordering. We may have a check which will be eliminated through some sequence of other passes, but depending on the exact pass sequence we might never actually do so or we might miss other optimizations from passes run before the check is finally eliminated.
The initial version (here) is implemented via InstSimplify. At the moment, it catches a few cases, but misses a lot too. I added test cases for missing cases in InstSimplify which I'll follow up on separately. Longer term, we should probably wire SCEV through to here to get much smarter loop aware simplification of the first iteration predicate.
When hoisting common code from the "then" and "else" branches of a condition
to before the "if", the HoistThenElseCodeToIf routine will attempt to merge
the debug location associated with the two original copies of the hoisted
instruction.
This is a problem in the special case where the hoisted instruction is a
debug info intrinsic, since for those the debug location is considered
part of the intrinsic and attempting to modify it may resut in invalid
IR. This is the underlying cause of PR36410.
This patch fixes the problem by handling debug info intrinsics specially:
instead of hoisting one copy and merging the two locations, the code now
simply hoists both copies, each with its original location intact. Note
that this is still only done in the case where both original copies are
otherwise (i.e. apart from location metadata) identical.
llvm-svn: 327408
When hoisting common code from the "then" and "else" branches of a condition
to before the "if", there is no need to require that debug intrinsics match
before moving them (and merging them). Instead, we can simply always keep
all debug intrinsics from both sides of the "if".
This fixes PR36410, which describes a problem where as a result of the attempt
to merge debug locations for two debug intrinsics we end up with an invalid
intrinsic, where the scope indicated in the !dbg location no longer matches
the scope of the variable tracked by the intrinsic.
In addition, this has the benefit that we no longer throw away information
that is actually still valid, helping to generate better debug data.
Summary:
This patch is an enhancement to propagate dbg.value information when Phis are created on behalf of LCSSA.
I noticed a case where a value carried across a loop was reported as <optimized out>.
Specifically this case:
```
int bar(int x, int y) {
return x + y;
}
int foo(int size) {
int val = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < size; ++i) {
val = bar(val, i); // Both val and i are correct
}
return val; // <optimized out>
}
```
In the above case, after all of the interesting computation completes our value
is reported as "optimized out." This change will add a dbg.value to correct this.
Several for loops in PromoteMemoryToRegister.cpp leave their increment
expression empty, instead incrementing the iterator within the for loop
body. I believe this is because these loops were previously implemented
as while loops; see https://reviews.llvm.org/rL188327.
Incrementing the iterator within the body of the for loop instead of
in its increment expression makes it seem like the iterator will be
modified or conditionally incremented within the loop, but that is not
the case in these loops.
It works fine if you can convert pointer to integer for address calculation and all registered targets do this.
But some ISAs have very restricted instruction set for the pointer calculation. During discussions were desided to retrieve information for GEP index from the Data Layout.
This came up during discussions in llvm-commits for
rL321653: Check for unreachable preds before updating LI in
UpdateAnalysisInformation
The assert provides hints to passes to require both DT and LI if we plan on
updating LI through this function.
Tests run: make check
llvm-svn: 321805
Summary:
We are incorrectly updating the LI when loop-simplify generates
dedicated exit blocks for a loop. The issue is that there's an implicit
assumption that the Preds passed into UpdateAnalysisInformation are
reachable. However, this is not true and breaks LI by incorrectly
updating the header of a loop.
One such case is when we generate dedicated exits when the exit block is
a landing pad (through SplitLandingPadPredecessors). There maybe other
cases as well, since we do not guarantee that Preds passed in are
reachable basic blocks.
The added test case shows how loop-simplify breaks LI for the outer loop (and DT in turn)
after we try to generate the LoopSimplifyForm.
If after if-conversion, most of the instructions in this new BB construct a long and slow dependence chain, it may be slower than cmp/branch, even if the branch has a high miss rate, because the control dependence is transformed into data dependence, and control dependence can be speculated, and thus, the second part can execute in parallel with the first part on modern OOO processor.
If a block has N predecessors, then the current algorithm will try to
sink common code to this block N times (whenever we visit a
predecessor). Every attempt to sink the common code includes going
through all predecessors, so the complexity of the algorithm becomes
O(N^2).
With this patch we try to sink common code only when we visit the block
itself. With this, the complexity goes down to O(N).
As a side effect, the moment the code is sunk is slightly different than
before (the order of simplifications has been changed), that's why I had
to adjust two tests (note that neither of the tests is supposed to test
SimplifyCFG):
* test/CodeGen/AArch64/arm64-jumptable.ll - changes in this test mimic
the changes that previous implementation of SimplifyCFG would do.
* test/CodeGen/ARM/avoid-cpsr-rmw.ll - in this test I disabled common
This patch modifies the indirect call promotion utilities by exposing and using
an unconditional call promotion interface. The unconditional promotion
interface (i.e., call promotion without creating an if-then-else) can be used
if it's known that an indirect call has only one possible callee. The existing
conditional promotion interface uses this unconditional interface to promote an
indirect call after it has been versioned and placed within the "then" block.
A consequence of unconditional promotion is that the fix-up operations for phi
nodes in the normal destination of invoke instructions are changed. This is
necessary because the existing implementation assumed that an invoke had been
versioned, creating a "merge" block where a return value bitcast could be
placed. In the new implementation, the edge between a promoted invoke's parent
block and its normal destination is split if needed to add a bitcast for the
return value. If the invoke is also versioned, the phi node merging the return
value of the promoted and original invoke instructions is placed in the "merge"
block.
D30041 extended SCEVPredicateRewriter to improve handling of Phi nodes whose
update chain involves casts; PSCEV can now build an AddRecurrence for some
forms of such phi nodes, under the proper runtime overflow test. This means
that we can identify such phi nodes as an induction, and the loop-vectorizer
can now vectorize such inductions, however inefficiently. The vectorizer
doesn't know that it can ignore the casts, and so it vectorizes them.
This patch records the casts in the InductionDescriptor, so that they could
be marked to be ignored for cost calculation (we use VecValuesToIgnore for
that) and ignored for vectorization/widening/scalarization (i.e. treated as
TriviallyDead).
In addition to marking all these casts to be ignored, we also need to make
sure that each cast is mapped to the right vector value in the vector loop body
(be it a widened, vectorized, or scalarized induction). So whenever an
induction phi is mapped to a vector value (during vectorization/widening/
scalarization), we also map the respective cast instruction (if exists) to that
vector value. (If the phi-update sequence of an induction involves more than one
cast, then the above mapping to vector value is relevant only for the last cast
of the sequence as we allow only the "last cast" to be used outside the
induction update chain itself).
This is the last step in addressing PR30654.
Clang implements the -finstrument-functions flag inherited from GCC, which
inserts calls to __cyg_profile_func_{enter,exit} on function entry and exit.
This is useful for getting a trace of how the functions in a program are
executed. Normally, the calls remain even if a function is inlined into another
function, but it is useful to be able to turn this off for users who are
interested in a lower-level trace, i.e. one that reflects what functions are
called post-inlining. (We use this to generate link order files for Chromium.)
LLVM already has a pass for inserting similar instrumentation calls to
mcount(), which it does after inlining. This patch renames and extends that
pass to handle calls both to mcount and the cygprofile functions, before and/or
after inlining as controlled by function attributes.
This patch implements Chandler's idea [0] for supporting languages that
require support for infinite loops with side effects, such as Rust, providing
part of a solution to bug 965 [1].
Specifically, it adds an `llvm.sideeffect()` intrinsic, which has no actual
effect, but which appears to optimization passes to have obscure side effects,
such that they don't optimize away loops containing it. It also teaches
several optimization passes to ignore this intrinsic, so that it doesn't
significantly impact optimization in most cases.
As discussed on llvm-dev [2], this patch is the first of two major parts.
The second part, to change LLVM's semantics to have defined behavior
on infinite loops by default, with a function attribute for opting into
potential-undefined-behavior, will be implemented and posted for review in
...this is a step in cleaning up our fast-math-flags implementation in IR to better match
the capabilities of both clang's user-visible flags and the backend's flags for SDNode.
As proposed in the above threads, we're replacing the 'UnsafeAlgebra' bit (which had the
'umbrella' meaning that all flags are set) with a new bit that only applies to algebraic
reassociation - 'AllowReassoc'.
We're also adding a bit to allow approximations for library functions called 'ApproxFunc'
(this was initially proposed as 'libm' or similar).
...and we're out of bits. 7 bits ought to be enough for anyone, right? :) FWIW, I did
look at getting this out of SubclassOptionalData via SubclassData (spacious 16-bits),
but that's apparently already used for other purposes. Also, I don't think we can just
add a field to FPMathOperator because Operator is not intended to be instantiated.
We'll defer movement of FMF to another day.
We keep the 'fast' keyword. I thought about removing that, but seeing IR like this:
%f.fast = fadd reassoc nnan ninf nsz arcp contract afn float %op1, %op2
...made me think we want to keep the shortcut synonym.
Finally, this change is binary incompatible with existing IR as seen in the
compatibility tests. This statement:
"Newer releases can ignore features from older releases, but they cannot miscompile
them. For example, if nsw is ever replaced with something else, dropping it would be
a valid way to upgrade the IR."
( http://llvm.org/docs/DeveloperPolicy.html#ir-backwards-compatibility )
...provides the flexibility we want to make this change without requiring a new IR
version. Ie, we're not loosening the FP strictness of existing IR. At worst, we will
fail to optimize some previously 'fast' code because it's no longer recognized as
'fast'. This should get fixed as we audit/squash all of the uses of 'isFast()'.
Note: an inter-dependent clang commit to use the new API name should closely follow
commit.
as long as each of the symbols is a comdat member. So we cannot
use them as part of a unique id for the module.
In this case, we skip the constant folding for now.
JumpThreading now preserves dominance and lazy value information across the
entire pass. The pass manager is also informed of this preservation with
the goal of DT and LVI being recalculated fewer times overall during
compilation.
This change prepares JumpThreading for enhanced opportunities; particularly
those across loop boundaries.
This was intended to be no-functional-change, but it's not - there's a test diff.
So I thought I should stop here and post it as-is to see if this looks like what was expected
based on the discussion in PR34603:
https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34603
Notes:
1. The test improvement occurs because the existing 'LateSimplifyCFG' marker is not carried
through the recursive calls to 'SimplifyCFG()->SimplifyCFGOpt().run()->SimplifyCFG()'.
The parameter isn't passed down, so we pick up the default value from the function signature
after the first level. I assumed that was a bug, so I've passed 'Options' down in all of the
'SimplifyCFG' calls.
2. I split 'LateSimplifyCFG' into 2 bits: ConvertSwitchToLookupTable and KeepCanonicalLoops.
This would theoretically allow us to differentiate the transforms controlled by those params
independently.
3. We could stash the optional AssumptionCache pointer and 'LoopHeaders' pointer in the struct too.
I just stopped here to minimize the diffs.
4. Similarly, I stopped short of messing with the pass manager layer. I have another question that
could wait for the follow-up: why is the new pass manager creating the pass with LateSimplifyCFG
set to true no matter where in the pipeline it's creating SimplifyCFG passes?
// Create an early function pass manager to cleanup the output of the
// frontend.
EarlyFPM.addPass(SimplifyCFGPass());
-->
/// \brief Construct a pass with the default thresholds
/// and switch optimizations.
SimplifyCFGPass::SimplifyCFGPass()
: BonusInstThreshold(UserBonusInstThreshold),
LateSimplifyCFG(true) {} <-- switches get converted to lookup tables and loops may not be in canonical form
If this is unintended, then it's possible that the current behavior of dropping the 'LateSimplifyCFG'
setting via recursion was masking this bug.
This patch tries to transform cases like:
for (unsigned i = 0; i < N; i += 2) {
bool c0 = (i & 0x1) == 0;
bool c1 = ((i + 1) & 0x1) == 1;
}
To
for (unsigned i = 0; i < N; i += 2) {
bool c0 = true;
bool c1 = true;
}
Usually the frontend communicates the size of wchar_t via metadata and
we can optimize wcslen (and possibly other calls in the future). In
cases without the wchar_size metadata we would previously try to guess
the correct size based on the target triple; however this is fragile to
keep up to date and may miss users manually changing the size via flags.
Better be safe and stop guessing and optimizing if the frontend didn't
communicate the size.
The fix is to avoid invalidating our insertion point in
replaceDbgDeclare:
Builder.insertDeclare(NewAddress, DIVar, DIExpr, Loc, InsertBefore);
+ if (DII == InsertBefore)
+ InsertBefore = &*std::next(InsertBefore->getIterator());
DII->eraseFromParent();
I had to write a unit tests for this instead of a lit test because the
use list order matters in order to trigger the bug.
The reduced C test case for this was:
void useit(int*);
static inline void inlineme() {
int x[2];
useit(x);
}
void f() {
inlineme();
inlineme();
}
I noticed this inefficiency while investigating PR34603:
https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34603
into hiding, but I'll try to clean that up with a follow-up patch anyway.
Summary:
This implements the design discussed on llvm-dev for better tracking of
variables that live in memory through optimizations:
http://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2017-September/117222.html
This is tracked as PR34136
llvm.dbg.addr is intended to be produced and used in almost precisely
the same way as llvm.dbg.declare is today, with the exception that it is
control-dependent. That means that dbg.addr should always have a
position in the instruction stream, and it will allow passes that
optimize memory operations on local variables to insert llvm.dbg.value
calls to reflect deleted stores. See SourceLevelDebugging.rst for more
details.
The main drawback to generating DBG_VALUE machine instrs is that they
usually cause LLVM to emit a location list for DW_AT_location. The next
step will be to teach DwarfDebug.cpp how to recognize more DBG_VALUE
ranges as not needing a location list, and possibly start setting
DW_AT_start_offset for variables whose lifetimes begin mid-scope.
See comment for why I think this is a good idea.
This change also:
- Removes an SCEV test case. The SCEV test was not testing anything useful (most of it was `#if 0` ed out) and it would need to be updated to deal with a private ~Loop::Loop.
- Updates the loop pass manager test case to deal with a private ~Loop::Loop.
- Renames markAsRemoved to markAsErased to contrast with removeLoop, via the usual remove vs. erase idiom we already have for instructions and basic blocks.
In the lambda we are now returning the remark by value so we need to preserve
its type in the insertion operator. This requires making the insertion
operator generic.
I've also converted a few cases to use the new API. It seems to work pretty
well. See the LoopUnroller for a slightly more interesting case.
llvm-svn: 313691
Add a profitability heuristic to enable runtime unrolling of multi-exit
loop: There can be atmost two unique exit blocks for the loop and the
second exit block should be a deoptimizing block. Also, there can be one
other exiting block other than the latch exiting block. The reason for
the latter is so that we limit the number of branches in the unrolled
code to being at most the unroll factor. Deoptimizing blocks are rarely
taken so these additional number of branches created due to the
unrolling are predictable, since one of their target is the deopt block.
